See i actually think O-turns are a very valuable skill to have, plus they are a good demonstrator of slow speed handling skills.
In the real world, if you miss a turn off or a parking spot, you dont want to have to go round the whole block, you'd just do a U-turn and be on your way. So it makes perfect sense to me.

I agree they are a valuable skill to have and I did say:

In 'real life', if you can't do a U-turn very well you can just paddle it around... There is no assessor watching to see if your foot touches the ground so you can put it down if you have to.
You don't have to go all the way around the block

for sure, but you certainly wouldnt teach people that way would you?
but anyway, i would say the primary purpose of the O-turns is slow speed control skills which is vital just for things like parking and heavy traffic.

asked the ride for life assessor about 'o' turns...he said there is no set size of road, but if i do the test in the cibbie the assessor should allow for a wider birth than his cbr125. He thinks that the o turns is just a show of slow handling skills. So if i pass my test on the cibbie ill be a happy man. Must practice o turns and e stops more.

I failed first RE. Was soo dissapointed I let all my guards down, and put myself in more danger that way. Staphan was my shadow and had a good chat with me when we got back. One thing Stephan said was that it really was a big favor assessor did by failing you. I half agreed with him then, but looking back now, I totally agree with him. Since that day, my driving awareness is much much better now than my last 17 years of driving. Now seeing stupid dumb drivers more clearly after my assessment day on the bike. 2nd asessment test was cancelled when I discovered the rear light had malfunctioned so assessor cancelled it. So now im waiting for an empty spot to try the 3rd time.

I failed my first go
I rode there on my own, to the test which was before the centre opened, so all the assessors were standing out the front
Got told if I didn't pass, to leave the bike and walk home, or the police would come. I really wasn't ready, my o-turns were poo, and I failed. He ran through the whole test anyway, and let me know what to work on.
Came back about a month later, got the same dude, walked away happy

I didnt fail my R-E but my O turns were on a back road that had no kerbs and a wicked drop off on each side. and it was definatly smaller than a normal surburban street
The sight of those drop offs made my o turns perfect as i wasnt losing the bike over the edge
Amazing how tight you can turn if your trying not to end up in a ditch
And all he asked my intructor before hand was "she can do o turns ok yeah?"

Failed the RE twice , due to nerves and the stoopid figure 8's (back in the old days), got the cage and R licences first time tho.
I found it alot easier not telling too many peeps that I was going for the R test - took away some of the 'performance anxiety.'

Failed my car license first hit.
Went through the stop sign going out of the car park
Still went and did the whole test though and the old lady told me I would have passed pretty easily if it wasn't for the stop sign. I could have taken it a pissy way and raged at myself for getting so close but I decided to look forward to passing the second one rather than failing the first. Passed it easily.
Passed R-E and R first time. Locked up the rear on my R-E e-stop (I had a problem with that on the lessons too) and clean sheet for R class.

O-turns are a useless skill. Do figure-eights learning and whatever the hell the test demands on the day. I personally like to turn in both directions. This grooming by instructors to get students passed is pointless. Do they still do emergency braking, thats the best bit.
I do appreciate the excuses for failing, grand levity. If your still alive after riding daily for 1 year post exam, then you pass.

When was the last time you did a U-Turn to the left, legally, on a public road in Australia?
O-Turns are sufficient for basic skills.
Sure, it shows more skill to figure 8, but its not something you are going to do on the road.

While I was chatting to my assessor abou the non-existent merits of my bike at midland pre-test, little asian chick came out with her assessor for her C class (car) assessment - got into the car, drove out of the centre and no more than 20 seconds later came back in the other entrance, assessor got out, walked into the building and didn't come back... insta-fail. Dunno what for, but the look on the chick's face was priceless.

And they're charging $71.80 for that.

I failed my first attempt.
Clean sheeted the entire test, which was no easy feat given than my instructor said I had the hardest inspector at city west.
Reeled off a perfect set of O turns. Given the instructor told me to take up the entire width of the road instead of doing them on full lock. If you can O turn on a 50cc scooter, a cibby is a cinch.
MY first brake attempt, I stopped at about 9 metres but locked the back wheel for the last 18 inches. Second attempt I fubared completely as I didn't know why I was being sent a second time around.
Now I have to wait untill august for another attempt. I think i'll have forgotten how to ride by then. Stinking system.
