$2500 Budget - need a tv and home theatre in a box

Parents want a new TV and sound system. Got about 2.5k to play with (less would be better).

    Any recommendations for a setup?

A 55" screen would be nice. Picture quality is a priority. Sound is not so important as they aren't in any way audiophiles. Network functionality is needed to watch movies off a PC in another room. I'm still trying get a guage as to whether they will watch 3d stuff or not, I would assume they won't really.

    Thanks!

Oh, I should mention a couple things....

Being parents, as stubborn as they can be at times, it'd have to be a well known brand
Also, 40" is probably a bit small for their liking.

They have a samsung LCD at the moment, but it developed some horrible problems with the screen early on....they may think twice about Samsung again.

Have a look on grays online as they sometime have good deals on Sony TVs (new and reconditioned)

    Samsung UA55D6000 55" Full HD 3D LED-LCD Smart TV | Plasma, LED & LCD TVs, LED-LCD TV : JB HI-FI

I like Samsungs TV's for quality, and this is a LED-LCD 6 series so a nice crisp picture.

    OR Sony Bravia KDL55EX720 55" Full HD 3D LED-LCD TV | Plasma, LED & LCD TVs, LED-LCD TV : JB HI-FI

Sony do still make some good stuff, and I like this one myself. Did they have a preference over Plasma/LCD or what is room lighting like?

As for the Home theatre, I would go-

PLE Computers Online Perth - WD WDTV LIVE AIR WIRELESS MEDIA PLAYER - WDBGXT0000NBK

Which is a very user friendly version and gives you the option of streaming via Wireless or via ethernet cable. WD are a very user friendly option for the technology challanged.

Or - PLE Computers Online Perth - NOONTEC MOVIEHOME V9T MEDIA PLAYER DUAL TUNER PVR - V9T

These have got good reviews from mates that have used them as they are a good DVB recorder as well as good playback of multiple formats and lots of options for advanced user.

Both options are around $2000 as a package.

Is there any point to those media streamers when most tvs I would be looking at have network/streaming functionality (well, at least all the ones I've looked at so far)?

Watched a movie on a 55" Panasonic plasma tonight that was bought about 3-6 months ago. Fantastic picture quality

Can TV's convert MKV these days? I know that TV's can stream some stuff, but not some of the newer file types. Maybe you can explain the setup you want to run in a bit more detail.

I recently picked up a Samsung 55" full HD LCD with 3D etc. for just under $2.5k.
Lovely picture, good capabilities, absolutely love the thing...

Got about $700 off the ticketed price, so if you do the same, you might be able to get them to throw a sound system in. Your probably going to be a smidge over $2.5k, but it wouldnt be by much........

Sorry, yeah they want a new tv and sound system to go with it. I say "theatre in a box" because they generally all come with a bluray player and other multimedia functionality.

So essentially, they will watch foxtel/free to air tv most of the time, they will need network access to watch videos on my computer (most tvs im looking at come with smart tv functionality though I'm not sure if some are better than others), needless to say, a lot of the players in the home theatre packages can do it too. They'll watch the occasional bluray/dvd (still waiting to hear how keen they are on 3d). That's pretty much it...

I may or may not come and install an xbox and/or ps3 up just to bask in it glory occasionally.....

Its amazing how cheap TV's are these days. I'd follow the above advice and stick to either a Samsung or a Panasonic if picture quality is the primary motivation! Welcome to take the risk with those other brands but personally I wouldn't waste the time or money....too many memories of all the dodgy LG's from a while back.

Another thing to consider is what is the room like where they will be watching? If it's brightly lit then consider LED over Plasma...these days the difference is not so great and I personally love the deep blacks from plasma's but ymmv. For the love of all that is holy DO NOT judge a TV on what it looks like in store...if you can go to a dedicated HT shop where they have at least a nicer viewing environment or if you know someone who has a screen in their home look at it there!! Consider that most box movers have harsh fluro lights and turn all the colour settings to "full" and then try and tell you the picture is great.....just no

HTIB.....waste of money imo. Get a decent BR player and you'll find that the inbuilt speakers of the flat panel's these days are pretty decent. Worse case scenario try and pick up a receiver and speakers second hand or if they are patient.....get it over time. A decent 2.1 setup will smoke any of those shite all in one kits any day of the week!

They used to a few years back but now they manufacture their own I believe.

OP I've always found DTV Forums to be pretty reliable with recommendations and pros / cons for stuff like this: DTV Forum Australia - Australia’s leading audio visual and home theatre forum
Jump into the Flat Panel subsection and have a browse or make a post and you'll usually get lots of helpful replies, pretty friendly bunch!
