Air con smell!!

Every time I switch on my air con it smells like cat pee!! Is that normal?
It's not a year old yet...

Not unless a cat pee'd in it.

Have you checked/washed the filter. When you do, have a look at the heat exchanger (radiator fin thingy) behind filter as to its cleanliness.

had a friend call up on sunday saying their evap aircon was blowing stink into their son's room. i jumped up to check it out, it was actually a rather large dead rat decomposing near the vent. huge maggots. very stinky.

The aircon in my other half's Rav 4 definately smells of cat pee 'cos a hairy stray tom cat gets into my garage and pisses up his car!

After a while the cat piss smell does go away, ( or I just get immune to it) and as I am a cat lover I am forgiving of the stray tom.

However for a house system, I am at a loss. All I can suggest is run it, as the water cascading over the pads should wash any cat piss (if it is a cat pissing on the pads) away.

If not, call your aircon fitters and complain. And don't be afraid to kick up a stink.

If thing's aren't right, you have every right to complain!

If its a house evap system then get on the roof, and wash the cardboard type evaporation media stuff with a hose until the water runs clear, then drain the sump and clean out the brown pond scum stuff off everything, reassemble and run for a while. It will smell for a few minutes but will go away with everything running clean water. Car one let me know as mine stinks too.

Haha. For what it's worth I think I've fixed my car at too, I changed the pollen filter and sprayed the heat exchanger with some glen 20. And ran the fan and heater for a while.
