    Anybody know an Akita breeder?

Just investigating at the moment, but if anybody has any breeder recommendations, would be happy to take them on-board.

They're the kind of dog you will wait for mate. Fantastic animals.

    Hi Cam,

I had one and they are very awesome dogs.
The only problem is the over protective nature of the dog. Mine loved me a littel too much and use to measure up SF on a regular basis, SF was petrified of ours.
When I fell pregnant with my second son we decided it was safer to find him a new home. It was very hard to let him go.

So basically what I am saying is they are pretty much a one person dog.

I've had one, the ex got him in the break-up. I am still somewhat bitter over it.

They're not a dog you waltz into, but I'd have to disagree that they're a one-person animal.

Really??? Mine must have been a psycho then . A few people I have spoken to have found the same thing.
If you have experienced different that is great, I may be able to convince SF into letting me have another if thats the case.

    Two males, or two bitches?

If they're one of each, he's done something wrong.

**edit: Fuckit, if nobody can approach them *with* him there, he's done something horribly wrong.

Will have to agree with you there...Mine although would really like to eat people who came near me would be sociable with me in his presence. But trust me you really wanted me around.

Sounds like those 2 dogs are a danger.

I was a bit taken back when he said no-one can go near them. Great for protecting the property but that would be about it. I would love a dog to protect my property like that but it would need to be friendly to other people when I'm around.

Akitas should be docile yet protective. He has fucked those dogs up, badly.

    "Tuff dog owner" syndrome?

Where they encourage aggression in the dogs, cos they're so tuff, and only a truly hardcore tuff nut can own a dog so awesome
In life you only get one lap, might as well make it a good one.

Heh, Seth (cam's old akita) was one of the friendliest dogs I ever met.

Scary as fuck if you didn't know he was that way, but I remember rocking up to cams place on more than one occasion (back in Kalgoorlie) to be greeted by seth poking his head over the front fence for a pat.

I had one till, once again, the ex-took her. Great dogs, daft as a brush but ooooh are they diggers. Just laid a brand new lawn and came home from work to find she'd rolled most of it back up and dug holes in the rest lol

    Bahahaha

Seth wasn't a digger, was bloody smart too. He did love toilet rolls though. Kept him in a large rear part of the house that was the bathroom and laundry. I started having to keep the toilet rolls in another part of the house because he figured out how to open the toilet door and would happily cover the yard and laundry in paper.

    Glorious bastard he was

Wow, I hadn't realised these dogs were reasonably well known outside Japan.

Coincidentally enough in Japan I was living and working in the state of Akita Ken, where they originally came from. My soccer team had little paw prints as their emblem. Also my girlfriend owned one when she was little. She was really fond of it too.

Cam have you ever heard of the Million Paws Walk? Its a massive RSPCA sponsored dog walk along the South Perth foreshore where thousands, and probably tens of thousands of people bring their mutts.

All shapes and sizes of dogs too. We went last year, and although I'm not familiar enough with Akita dogs to be actively looking out for and recognising them, I wouldn't be surprised if some people had brought theirs.

It might be worth coming a long to the next one, finding some owners and having a chat to them. Sunday 17th May

If we're talking about them in general, this is how fucking badass Akitas are.

During his owner's life Hachikō saw him off from the front door and greeted him at the end of the day at the nearby Shibuya Station. The pair continued their daily routine until May 1925, when Professor Ueno didn't return on the usual train one evening. The professor had suffered a stroke at the university that day. He died and never returned to the train station where his friend was waiting.
Hachikō was given away after his master's death, but he routinely escaped, showing up again and again at his old home. After time, Hachikō apparently realized that Professor Ueno no longer lived at the house. So he went to look for his master at the train station where he had accompanied him so many times before. Each day, Hachikō waited for Professor Ueno to return. And each day he didn't see his friend among the commuters at the station.
The permanent fixture at the train station that was Hachikō attracted the attention of other commuters. Many of the people who frequented the Shibuya train station had seen Hachikō and Professor Ueno together each day. Realizing that Hachikō waited in vigil for his dead master, their hearts were touched.[citation needed] They brought Hachikō treats and food to nourish him during his wait.
This continued for 10 years, with Hachikō appearing only in the evening time, precisely when the train was due at the station. [1]

A dog so badass, he has a bronze statue and an annual day of recognition.
