I actually work for a Windows house mate, Linux and Apple are dirty words here. Unfortunately too, discounts on Mac hardware are very hard to get unless you actually work for them.

Very much true, you will find no matter where you go most of the prices will be the same. they don't really cut price's off apple products.

desmo's right. most apple store employee's wont be able to help.
genuine apple inc employees are able to provide discounts on hardware for ONLY 3 ITEMS per year. sucks eh?
my brother is a senior-level sales exec for apple over in melb, but he can still only buy 3 discounted items a year. (luckily i managed to get one of them!! )
best bet? check the apple.com.au online store and hit the "refurbished items" link. you can grab some serious discounts on little used babies there.

Yeah, a pissy $100 for being a student. The US prices are $500 cheaper than ours, even when our dollar was almost par with theirs.

There's a few rumours that the new Macbooks are due in a couple of weeks, so might be an idea to wait a bit. Usually Apple prices remain the same throughout their product cycle which means the exsting macbooks aren't great value at the moment, whereas the new ones will have the new tech and better specs for the same price, making them better value....apparently.

I'd get right on down to Murdoch Tav and start scouting... but I'd probably spend more than the $100 you'd save getting chicks drunk. Drunk students chicks are cool.

When I bought my MBP I managed to get around $400 off; education discount (I used my own name, they didn't check) and salary sacrifice so no tax.
But yeh, look into the refurbished items, you get some good deals there. If you're going new, definitely go for the educational discount.

obviously if you can put it through a business (yours or someone elses) you can save whatever the GST component is.

i go to ecu, im happy to make a purchase for u if u wanna claim the discount, i have no idea how it works tho so ull have to do the research. just pm me.
theres also a new tax thing u can do for personal computers, if you have a kid in highschool you can claim 50% of the value of the computer in your tax return, some incentive to get more technology for school students, its very new but i sorted my lil sisters laptop through that(to be claimed in next years return)
