    Beep Test

I have to do the beep test on Wensday, and I have beem doing my head in. I got to level 8.7 in August and in the last month or so I have been running/training more than what I did back then.
I did a practise test by myself last week and only made it to level 6.5. I have to get 8.0 to pass on Wensday. I hope when I do the test that having other people doing it with me will help push me that bit further. Has anyone got any tips to help me pass.

Tips - best tip I can give you is be mentally tough.

Level 8 doesn't require bulk fitness to get to its being able to keep the legs turning over. You need to be strong mentally.

2nd tip - don't run through just because the first ones are slow. Time it properly and hit the ends on the right time. Reason for that is then you don't stop and wait. Mentally it is easier if you keep on the move.

This, level 8 is about 8-9 mins of running, just keep going mate. As Viper said timing is the key, you need to be hitting the line at the beep, keep turning up early and your wasting energy!
    Above all else, keep running!

    ^^THIS!!

I have played Soccer at a pretty good level and Iv done numerous beep tests. Best I scored was a 14.9 a few years back (csb, lol), but was always in the high 12's and 13's. Timing is everything!!

Find your pace and rhythm early. Its much harder when your running quicker than you need to, hitting a line and having to stop and wait on the next beep. It doesnt matter if your running slower, or more within yourself than all of the heroes running quickly and having to wait for the next beep. Let them go, and work to your own pace / the beeps. Time it so that your just hitting the line in time to turn and go again. If your timing is right, you'll find that you will be able to naturally raise your pace (with less effort) as the beeps start to get quicker...

Hopefully your able to maintain that rhythm until your having to push yourself between the markers to make each side for the beep.
Toward the end - just when you think that you cant go any more, you should be able to push for an extra couple of lengths. People seem to pull up a little early, even if you start missing the line by the time the beep sounds - do not stop. Keep pushing until the organisers / facilitators have told you to stop.
You will realise how quickly whatever pain your going through subsides once you have stopped - its all gone within half a minute, so keep pushing yourself...

Other than that - try and aim high.
If you need an 8, convince yourself that you should be hitting a 9.

Lots of detail, i know - but iv hated these things for years and every little bit of knowledge helps.
    Good luck!!

I downloaded it from the Army website years ago when I was training, put it on the ipod and ran with it to learn the timing. You'll get to 8-9 as others have said without needing to be massively fit just by knowing the timing.
Gutsy question. You're a shark. Sharks are winners, and they don't look back because they have no necks. Necks are for sheep.

Another handy hint if its for the police entry exam. Stop as soon as you reach the required amount as they used to make make you do it again the following week and you have to beat your original level And then beat it again at the end of the academy.

Thanks everyone. I have been running and trying to build my fitness especially over the last 6 weeks. I think its just going to be a mental game. One other question is should your last step to the line be a big one so that you turn with a wide leg gate? Or is it better to be taking smaller steps so that the legs are not loaded to much?

Timing and pace is everything. Might be an idea to have plenty of practice runs before the actual test, that is if you do this again in the future. The strategy behind the beep test is somewhat different to road/track running.

Not to be too much of a dick, but that well known hint is a lazy man's way out. Not saying this is your own personal philosophy, Fozz; but anyone striving to survive within a paramilitary organisation would be better off not thinking along those lines.

Good luck tomorrow, Footer. Give it your best.

Its just a friendly hint not to bust your arse trying to prove you are super human in the first instance. You get another 2 chances in the coming weeks. He may not even be doing the Police Physical. But you do the beep test right at the start then have to do all the other tests. So there is no point rooting yourself trying to prove something then stuffing other drills and risking your chance. Then have to wait 6-12 months to try again

You can always smash yourself the second week if thats what you want to do.

Well my 2 year old kept me up all night last night. (Poor thing is sick) Up at 5am to get to work. Stress all morning then did the test at 10am. I passed I had to push hard but it was not as bad as what I had built it up in my head. Thanks once again to everyone for the tips. I have to do it again in about 4 weeks so I'm going to increase the intensity of my training so then the I know I will make it easy.

    So......... What did you score?

As you've said, its not that bad actually doing the test. I think people make it out to be worse than it is.
So long as you passed tho, good stuff!
