Thought I'd kick off an EOS megathread for all the Canon fans on here.

    What does everyone have?
    When did you purchase it?
    How much did you pay?
    What's your next upgrade?
    etc etc

I'm about to jump on the EOS bandwagon.
The newly announced 550D has caught my eye. Although its release comes about a year after the 500D, would it be worth my while to snap up their latest entry level toy, or get a dirt cheap deal on a 450D/500D?

I'd probably wait until a few 550D reviews come out before making any final decision though, because if it has similar performance to the 7D's 18mpx sensor then it'll be a great alternative.

    Or get a 7D

500d, with efs 17-85mm usm lens, an efs 10-22mm USM wide angle and a fixed ef 50mm f1.4 USM lens (These last two lenses secondhand). Also an Aputure brand remote timer/controller.

Picked up a Manfrotto 190 XPROB tripod with a 804RC2 head. Chasing a decent flash at the moment CANON Speedlite 430EX II looks good, can be had for around $310 new.

Also bought a Crumpler 8 million dollar home as a bag (also for other stuff while travelling). Plus UV filters, better camera strap and some other little nick nacks, probably spent $3000 on everything (all lenses, body and bag).

    1Ds MkII
    20D (for underwater)

Love 'em. Occasionally pick up a Nikon but it feels a bit like picking up crabs. Not particularly bad, just annoying and leave you with a bad kawasaki taste in your mouth.

Trusty old 30D which is starting to get a little lonely all by it's self in the bag. I'm thinking a 7D might be comming along soon.

    Lowpro backpack & shoulder bag
    Couple of IS USM lenses
    Kit lens or two
    580EXII
    YumCha Tripod.

Canon EOS 20D + 17-85 (stabilised kit lens) but the lens autofocus died just out of the warranty.

From Gerry Gibbs. Don't go there.
They wouldn't honour my 5-year extended warranty coz it apparently only covered the 20D body, even tho the invoice shows the body+lens as a kit. Might as well have saved my money and bought online.

Kit was about $3000 about 5 years ago.

Spent lots (at least a ton) on other gear including Sigma glass, filters, bags, battery, cards, tripods etc.

Sigma lenses are 17-70mm and 70-300mm. Miss my kit lens, images seemed sharper with better colour.

It sad, but after my Canon 17-85 lens died the SLR has fallen in to dis-use.

I pretty much exclusively use my Canon IXUS these days, coz its much handier and nine times out of ten gets me the shot I want for hardly any bulk. And its video is good for tank-mounts Its taken a lot of abuse.

Been tempted to part with the gear but it'd be worth bugger all compared to the bodies you can get now.

    40D
    350D
    EF 24-105mm f/4.0 L IS USM
    EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L USM
    EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM
    EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
    EF 50mm f/1.8 II
    EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 (kit lens)
    EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 (kit lens)
    Extender EF 2x II
    Speedlite 580EX II

Total cost: I don't want to think about it.

Next purchase: The new bodies and FF options are nice, but the increase in image quality isn't there not can't justify them. Would get a 7D if the 40D packs it in. But not until then.
A 400mm f/2.8 would be nice, but same goes, can't justify it.
Maybe a nice macro lens could be next if anything.

But believe it or not a Canon S90 will be the next addition.

Canon EOS40d (Around $2,500 18m Ago for the enthusiast kit from Camera Warehouse Leederville)
Canon 17-85 f4-5.6 IS (Kit Lens)

    Canon 70-200 f4L ($799 New Digi-Rev ebay as of 23/2/10)
    Nissin Di622 Speedlight ($160 New Digi-Rev ebay)
Phottix Battery Grip (New Ebay inc 2 Spare Batteries & 6xAA Adaptor)

This is why I went an older 1Ds - full frame without all the mod cons, and significantly cheaper than a 5DII.

    7D
    17-55 is f2.8
    70-200 f4 L
    1.4x extender
    10-22
    50 f1.8
    430 exII
    580 exII

Have to pick up a macro soon to keep the wife happy.

Won't be upgrading the body anytime soon as I am more than happy with the 7D performance. Thought about FF but in reality can't justify spending 10K getting a FF equivalent when the difference is marginal.
