My S100 developed the 'Lens Error' yesterday, ie wont retract. Apprently a common issue, only had it since December, never dropped or mistreated.
Under warranty luckily.

You can detach them from your camera body easier when you are using a tripod for long exposures

I've got the crumpler "convenient disgrace" strap. Convenient Disgrace
much easier to carry the weight of my gear on that, then the canon strap and also it's plain black so doesn't attract as much attention.

I've got one of these, and if you can get past the wanky American gun slinger-like poses it's actually a pretty useful bit of kit. I use it at parties/BBQs or if I go to a play area with my son as it frees up hands and allows me to move around bend over etc without having to worry about the camera swinging around my neck and clouting something (or someone - it's a bit hard to bend over and pick up a small child with a camera round your neck). It hides away under an un tucked shirt/T-shirt and the only time I have to be a bit careful is squeezing past things or sitting down. It gives fast access and is secure.
I was thinking of converting my standard strap into quick release though so if anyone knows where to get hold of small quick release clips let me know (maybe a camping shop I guess). Don't see the point of buying a whole new strap when I can add a quick release buckle myself. I need this for when I'm using the holster (god, it's horrible having to even use the word) and, like Simon mentioned, when using the tripod.
Incidentally drifter, on the subject of security, thieves are now targeting expensive lenses and removing them while the owner isn't looking. They know what they're looking for and the first the owner knows is when they lift up their camera to find the lens is gone. Mainly Europe I've heard about this happening so give it 5-10 years to start happening here. I don't think a no name strap helps that much when you've got a large DSLR dangling there. An un-cuttable strap can be a good move though, as one way people used to steal cameras was to use a Stanley knife to cut the strap, grab and run (same with handbags but probably less of a worry for most of us)
edit - Actually I might just use a couple of key rings on the end of the strap. It won't be quick release but it will be secure and removable and won't leave lengths of strap still dangling as those other straps seem to.

How about these ones? I think the added benefit over the Canon is obvious, especially the possibility of matching your outfit. Gonna get one now?

Naww. Actually, thinking about flogging most of the kit. But I never had a problem with the Canon straps, was curious why people were switching 'em. Because they're gay, as it turns out![]()

Small world. I commented on that third one recently on what must be your Flickr site.

Hamster: The only thing my 1Ds has been used for in the last 12 months or so is to take diving student mug-shots for their certification cards. A function amply performed by my G12.
Something in me broke, I don't know how, but about a year ago I went from trying to crack into the professional scene and being totally absorbed by it to where I've been since: I just can't get myself excited about taking photos. Occasionally I'll see something nice (like the pre-dawn glow over a flat river with rowers out past Mt Henry Bridge on the way to work) and the cogs will start turning of how to execute some good work on a theme, but five minutes later it's gone.
It's a bit sad. But I guess if I sold the gear now it means someone else who is fired up can get some use out of it before it becomes totally redundant, and if I get excited again I can start the acquisition frenzy all over. Maybe a Pentax 645D instead of the Canon gear.

Fair enough, things change, and I can relate to enthusiasm leaving your system. The good thing about photography is that you don't need the latest and greatest gear to take a good shot. So any time you get the urge you can use what you have to hand, be it G12, iPhone or whatever.

Yeah, quite keen to pick up where I left off about 18 months ago with the underwater stuff, hence the G12.

Funny you mention that order. Looking at bodies and lenses and meh. But I'll struggle with the lights![]()

Well, I guess it is "drawing with light". :-)You'll have to go au naturale and use what nature gives you, although admittedly that can be pretty limited indoors. Easy for me to say though, I mainly do landscapes.
