I cant compare the two, but I just recently bought the canon 50mm 1.4, and its a fantastic lens. If the Sigma is on the same level, then you wont be disappointed with either.
I have the Canon 50-1.4, seems to work great although getting sharp focus @ 1.4 is 50/50.

Really? My 50 /1.4 is pin sharp at 1.4. Awesome lens.

would IS even make a difference on a 50?
I find the problem at 1.4 is not so much sharpness, but keeping the point of focus sharp by not rocking back or forward.
Having said that, 5.6 is extremely good, so maybe buy a 1.8 instead.....
IS would be good, it's 80mm 0n a crop sensor [yeh, I know it's not really 80mm....]
Only if you want to shoot at 1/16th of a second without a tripod... but then it's surprising just how often you go looking for that little bit more light...

Mostly I use the 50-1.4 at night w/o flash so that may be why I have focus issues. If it's sunny I use the zooms.

Canon peeps - what do you think this guy's lens is? I was intrigued that he'd be using what I assume is something like a 70-200mm so close to the action. If you're interested, I took this at Motorvation earlier this year.

Guessing here, isn't that the guy from circleworks (or something similar) and yes, deffo looks like the 70-200l f/2.8 IS model. With a full frame or even the 1.3 crop 1DmkII style fast shoot bodies, 70-200 is the go-to lens...

Yep, I love mine - but for that close, I would have thought a 24-70 would have been better.

I've had both there before. The 24-70 was great for burnouts right up at the start but was shit as soon as things got moving. The 70-200 was a bit tight at the start line but was a godsend further down the track. Bear in mind, even at the fence line where he is there, you're not exactly on top of the cars - the track and runoff is pretty wide and the competitors are in the middle...

Fairy nuff.

The correct answer, of course, is "both". Two 1D bodies, one with the 24-70 and one with the 70-100.
I don't think motorsport photography in Hicksville, WA makes enough coin to rock that kind of setup though![]()

Gordon would probably be able to manage that set-up.![]()

Have been playing with the 1DX at work lately. I will simply say it's everything Canon users have been waiting for. Almost perfect. We're having some flash issues though. AF is brilliant, processors brilliant, sharpness brilliant, speed is ridiculous.
I was about to write Canon off and switch to Nikon. Really, I was. The mk3 and mk4 are both utterly shit. I hate them. Don't ever buy them. I can't stress that enough.
This may have renewed my faith.
