Compression gear (skins, nike pro combat, under armour)

I'm looking to buy some compression gear for under my uniform for grid iron/NFL- what are people's opinions on brands and lengths?

I'm looking at some under armour heatgear from Sneakers, Casual Shoes, Athletic Shoes Online | Eastbay.com , probably a 3/4 top and shorts.

Are the long leggings much better than shorts? I rarely have any problems with my calves, so would it be overkill or useful to get long leggings?

I don't really know much and never used compression gear before, so any advice would be appreciated.

The KMart, big w compression gear is ok of you just want to wear them under leathers. I bought the same Tesla stuff as Thunderbird to wear under leathers. No idea on durability.
For training I still prefer Skins. I bought them years ago when they first hit the scene here. They work well keeing the body temp regulated. Keeps me at peak strength for longer I find. And my Skins are still in awesome condition.
You can buy them cheap at Jim Kidd at Harbourtown.

    I prefer genuine skins.
Tried a couple of the other brands, but I don't think they are anywhere as good.

Thought about getting some skins, but what I can find (and I've looked at Jim Kidd harbourtown), I can't get skins anywhere near as cheap as Under Armour or Nike gear. Skins are about 3 times the price of Nike or UA from eastbay.

I want to know more about whether long leggings are going to be really useful, or if should just get shorts.

If you're anywhere near Mt Lawley there's a fitness store across the road from Mondo's Butcher that had Skins at 30% off I think it was. So Saturday morning when you get your roast lamb/beef/pork sandwich after a workout/ride, go in and check it out.

and then cross the road and go to the puppy store. My Saturday mornings rule.

I wear skinz, not for cramping, but for cooling. Staying cool is important to me. Long legged skins keeps me cooler than just wearing a pair of shorts.

Besides cooling, its also hygine thing, I like to keep my protective equipment off my skin as much as possible.

I wear a long sleved skinz top when I wear chest/shoulder protection (ice hockey), its a lot more comfortable because its able to move around.

What protective equipment do you wear? You may find that having the long legs makes everything more comfortable, especially if you are wearing them under long pants.

The majority of people I know wear skinz, those who dont usually wear 2XU. Make sure you try them on first. I found the cut of skinz were more compatable with my body shape. Ive tried 2XU, BSc and they didnt fit quite right.

P.S. Skinz do last a long time. I have had my set for just over 2 years and they have been worn and washed at least twice a week.

    A400 Men's Compression Long Tights | SKINS

There are some ace reviews on the website (surprised it hasn't been moderated)

just sweat more if anything wearing more clothing and feeling like a dick for running in tights.
I love the increased ball control provided by the 400s

what are your reasons for wanting compression gear? (I'm guessing cooling down too much between plays?)

Shoulder pads, 3/4 length padded pants and helmet

Few reasons, cooling down between plays (at training and during games). My quads are a little dodgy, so anything that'll help is a plus. Also wanting something under my pads that's going to wick moisture, rather than a cotton shirt.

Have tried on a fair few different brands

All the cheap stuff to me didn't really offer much compression. Skins A400 was miles a head in that regard. Have just bought some 2xu on many recommendations, compression seems more targeted than A400, but can't say much more as have not trained/raced in them yet.

I use UA compression shirts under a BJJ gi. Works well for keeping you dryer, don't know about any fatigue differences. UA gear seems to hold up pretty well, too.

i bought some long pants and long shirt from ebay for under $40 including express delivery.
compared them to mate's geniune underarmour and identical, down to the inside stitching and weight.

Definately ditch the cotton shirt and use a short sleave compression top. Much more comfortable.

3/4 pants... doh. I guess it depends on whether or not you will think full length pants would get ripped up.

    Anyone used these for snowsports?

My dilemma is that I never really wear thermals because I just overheat whilst snowboarding. However I am going somewhere "proper cold" (Hokkaido - Japan) in a couple of months. What happens when you sweat? All the products say "moisture wicking" but does that mean my layer will freeze as soon as I get on the chairlift? That would not be pleasant >_<

So in other words : obviously the compression tops will not be as warm as regular thermals... but I don't want real thermals (see : overheating) I just want something to take the edge off. Or will they have 0 effect in that regard?

Having snow boarded in Japan for the past few years I would suggest getting some proper thermals.

It's mighty cold over there and with the wind chill it will kill your energy levels.
