    Computer repair

gotrepair got a call for the misses today to tell me the computer diedApparently a breaker tripped in the fuse box when she was making toast.Found the fans are working but it won't turn on, Took it apart and cleaned out the dust, couldn't see anything obvious.Does anyone here fix computers ? Or can you recommend someone ?Thanks

Pure speed in sixth gear on a 5,000 foot straightaway is one thing, but pure speed in third gear on a gravel-strewn, downhill, ess turn is quite another.

Do you mean the computer doesn't show the post screen? If the fans inside are running, at least the computer's power supply unit is still working.

It sounds like it won't post, so pull your RAM out and put them in one by one and test. If you only have one stick, there aren't many options for you, since faulty RAM can stop your computer from posting, but also there could be a possibility your motherboard has died. Make sure all your components (ie. RAM and video cards etc) are seated properly inside, also check all your cables and connections, make sure it hasn't been knocked loose...

Who did you buy your computer from? and also how long ago... check if it's under warranty still...

Going further than an open and clean is beyond me. Computer is out of warranty. Everything appeared to be seated correctly. Lesmurdie isn't too far but anyone closer would be handy.

Another handy trick can be removing the CMOS (i think thats what its called) battery (little round one for the mother board), waiting 10sec then putting it back in.

My comp sometimes endlessly powers up the fan then restarts and pulling the battery for 10sec and putting it back in usually does the trick

I'm as far from a computer whizz as one gets but if your looking for a pro-opinion, my Mrs works at Computer Repairs WA in Padbury.

They'll do a diagnosis on the bench for twenty something dollars and let you know what the problem is and whether it's worth fixing.

The techs in there really seem to know their stuff.

he has just nicked off for two weeks but Deano on the forums here is an IT guru, he will pick it up, fix it, drop it back to ya. he is very friendly towards PSB folks so he will look after ya. if your still stuck in two weeks, give him a PM about it.
If its got tits or wheels, it going to give you trouble.

Turns out the hard drive & power supply are ok but the other stuff inside the computer that makes it all work is dead
    New computer required

If you dont game or do photo editing etc, get a new cheap one from austins or netplus or PLE

NetPlus Micro Computers - Package Systems

then use your "Licensed" copy or windows to install the Operating system

Remember you can grab all your data etc in the old PC's user folder then transfer the whole file across. (C:Users/name of your computer)

Although you could 'upgrade' (or replace) the faulty components... it could be easier to simply get a package system... however, I would recommend to take some time and do your research on what will meet your level of usage... you could potentially save yourself a bundle of money if you don't have to replace most of your components...

One thing for sure though, like whowalks said, you can use your copy of windows (or whatever OS you are running) rather than buying a new copy unless you have an older OS and wanted to upgrade.

I will look for a new tower as Ive got an ok monitor etc As I have the most hated OS on the planet (Vista) I'll look to go for windows 7 and might as well move on from pentim to i3 or 5' no need to go for 7

New Asrock Z68 extreme 3 gen 3 from Netplus $166

    i5 2500k MSY $232

    16GB RAM MSY $100

I kept PSU, Case, HDD and Graphics card.
