    Hey all.

Well, my better half decided this morning that she wanted a new digital camera. After a little bit of browsing on the canon website she went to camera house in the city and picked up a new sony dsc-t10.

Now, as soon as she told me this I was thinking "oh no" as she mentioned that the saleswoman told her that "sony and canon are the two best compact digital camera brands".
Now, I have always thought companies like olympus (apparently 3rd best), minolta, fuji and nikkon were meant to be pretty good (along with canon), but would not have thought sony were up there.

Just wondering from those who know cameras, are these any good, and was the sales pitch a load of rubbish?

for what it's worth sath, they're all pretty good these days..

as long as you get a brand name, you cant really go wrong..

Sony is good for parts, their inventory is huge.. I prefer fuji.. but that's just me..

she already bought the sony. but before that we were looking at the canon ixus 1000 Ti (about $500 on ebay, but we would have gotten it locally for the warranty. about $800 rrp i think) or the canon ixus 60

I'm looking at getting a small digital camera as well. Currently looking at

    Ricoh R4 $449 - 7x optical zoom, 6 mega pixals

Olympus FE 200 $399- 5x optical zoom, 6 mega pixals.

Anybody have any suggestions for alternatives or personal experience with either of these two models?

    T

my family and myself have always bought olympus.. and i'm not exactly sure why.

i just don't like them, and they seem unreliable and bad on batteries. for those reasons, i'm not buying another. just something worth taking into consideration

Canon Ixus seem the way to go. Awesome cameras, small and take great pics.

My next one will be a canon. I LOVED the pics my mate took with his (now superceded) Canon S70

plenty of up to date comprehensive and unbiased reviews.

For my biased opinion Canon and Fuji

Sony accept only their proprietry memory sticks. The others accept more standardised media.

This is what I can recall from researching digital cameras:

Canon does its own technology and doesn't share with anyone else. Canon will generally give good results, though some lower end models were a bit flimsy in build quality.

Sony does it's own technology and also gets good lenses from Carl Zeiss (sp?). Other manufacturers also use Sony chips. Sony with a good lens should give good results and they have some unique features - but also have proprietary cards.

Kodak now just makes software for digital cameras and other manufacturers use their Software. Kodak digital cameras I have used were crap.

Nikon does its own technology and others also use it.

Olympus digital cameras I have used were pretty rough image quality wise.

Pentax gets technology from Nikon (in the DSLRs anyway)

Reviews of Fuji cameras I have read always seem to exhibit ISO gain due to a minimum ISO of 200
I can't think what more you could possibly need to know... except maybe this:
