I use free avg on every machine I build and so far very few issues so as far as i'm concerned it works well and isn't worth moving to another program.
My AVG (V8) broke itself trying to update a while back - the whole thing shat itself and would neither uninstall nor reinstall. Same thing happened to my friend. Apparently it was a reasonably widespread issue. (c-c-c-combobreaker)
Still better than norton =J though I hear the 2009 version is supposed to be actually ok?
Since then, I've been using 3month trials of ESET NOD32 (I'll remember to order a real subscription someday), and find it fantastic. My computer hasn't slowed or shown any signs of nasties, it has a tiny footprint, and it just seems to... work.
Plus a lot of people whose opinion I respect swear by it.

I love Malware Bytes Anti-Malware, it has a very good reputation around the traps, especially over at whingepool. I did use adaware for a while, but all it ever seemed to do was tell me when anything happened, I only wanted to know when bad things happened.
