    Email Hosting or Forwarding

OK... I have a private domain I have registered and have had basic web/email hosting in the US for many years now. However I no longer bother with a webpage/blog and have removed that from my account. However I do still want to use the email addresses if possible even though it simply gets forwarded to my gmail account. By keeping it I dont have to change anything I have registered for, etc for the last 10 years.

So just wondering if anyone has any ideas on just email hosting or forwarding/parking whatever term it is nowadays. Basically I dont see the point of paying about $90 a year for web hosting if i can avoid it.

    Suggestions?

^^ you need someone to host your DNS records and MX relay for your domain to work (this is seperate from "registering" your domain and paying annual renewal for it - that's just effectively the license to use the name).

If you can get a static IP you can take care of the MX yourself, but you still need to pay someone to host your DNS zone.

So i guess what I'm saying is: you're shit out of luck and will need to pay someone hosting, unless you can get 2 machines permanently on the net to set up primary and secondary nameservers for your domain.

Your ISP *may* be open to the idea of hosting secondary DNS for you, but you'll likely find that the cost is the same as or close to full hosting.

    edit:
another option may be to find someone who has their own hosting space/dns control and ask them to host the DNS zone for you and act as primary MX, for cheap/beer.

actually, i think joker (www.joker.com) can set up mail redirection as part of their DNS hosting/registration? maybe check out joker (think the costs are something like 6 euro/yr)...

Google Apps? Free email hosting, same benefits of Google and you can hook your mailbox into your Gmail account and have it work seamlessly.

Yeah thanks for pushing the "sponsor" of PSB... but at double what I am paying now, instead of reducing what I am paying now, I think I will give it a miss.

Thanks... that looks cool. Will check it out more... only issue I see is 200MB limit per free domain. Not sure how much email between 3 suer accounts would go thru each year.

    OK... further question.

I have a ADSL account with iiNet that obviusly comes with webspace, email addresses etc. Can I use DNS forwarding to have people who type www.mydomain.com goto www.iinet.net.au/~myaccount/ ?? I think that would work for web but what about emails?
