    Feral cats

I have a feral cat living underneath my shop (it returns every now and then to have it's kittens).
Although it was highly amusing watching a Perente take one of it's kittens last year, it stinks, leaves dead mice everywhere and I really don't like feral animals.
Other than sitting there waiting with a speargun, what other options do I have to kill it?

You could try a fox trap, We have caught a few feral cats in our time with ours probably more cats then foxes come to think of it.

Is there a ranger that can leave a trap out. They'll usually do the euthanasia bit as well.

A Ranger should be able to set up a trap (cage-style, not bear-trap style) to catch it. After that if it is really feral, they will be able to euthanise is humanely.

I have reluctantly had the RSPCA rangers catch two feral cats in my backyard over the years. One was actually someone's abandoned pet and the other was truly wild.

Please do not try to kill the animal yourself. I have heard too many stories of people botching it up. No living thing deserves a painful and prolonged death.

The RSPCA will prosecute anyone who kills an animal in a non-humane way - such as with a speargun. You could be up for a $10,000 fine.

Jokes aside. It might be an option. I have a friend who had the same situation occur. It took some time, but eventually the cat (which was an abandoned pet in his case) came good and learned to trust its new owner. If you could do the same you could then have it neutered and there will be no more kittens.

The aspirin poisoning would be considered cruel as well.

I have a cage trap that I have caught many feral cats in, works a treat. Meat inside cage, a little outside the cage so they get a taste for it, and next morning you have the cat.

Some people recommend filling a wheelie bin or some kind of trough with water and just dropping the cage in. I'm not a supporter of this method as I reckon it's pretty cruel.

.22 is the most humane and non messy method I use. A pole with a looped length of string at one end that can be pulled taught through the pole is a quick clean method of causing asphyxiation and works well.

If it is a feral cat you will want to be careful handling the cage, they are very savage and will try scratch you through the cage. Throw a blanket or towel over the cage and then they can't scratch you plus it calms them down a little.

Never leave Antifreeze/coolant uncovered and exposed outside as Cats find it irresistable and it kills them.

Down here with some shires they have cat traps available that they lend you, you set the trap, catch the cat, and take it to RSPCA. Although I'd say the ranger option would be better as you say it's a feral cat- so they would deal with it afterwards too.

Don't get me wrong man, I never went out of my way looking for them. The area I come from had a massive problem with feral cats. Way too many for rangers to be interested in or to wait for traps to be effective. With the damage they caused it was just a case of getting as many eliminated as possible as quickly as possible. What we didn't shoot....we poisoned.

There was no prolonged suffering either, make sure there's anough aspro in their and it's fairly instant.
