You still need to shell out for the management console if you want to do the really cool stuff though

LOL @ former employer ... who decide to put the Mgt Console on a VM too; so when the VM goes down, what do you have ?

You have the the VI client that can connect directly to each one of the hosts...
I use a Virtual "Virtual Center" all the time...

I apologise if I was not clear, I am against anyone pirating VMWare products and was just asking if Nath had a spare, legitimate licence. But having done some research and found they're not transferable it kinda kills that idea.

If you want a free workstation product take a look at Sun Virtual Box, runs on just about any platform.

losing your virtualcenter is no real big deal anyway (i fucked my first install up  ) - reinstall, re-add licenses, re-add hosts.

The only thing you loose is historical performance data, not such a big deal.. include the sql db in your backup routine.
