    Foundation day usurped

    For "West Australian day" as it will;
be more inclusive of Aboriginal people
    See here.

Am I the only one who sees this as an utter joke? What's next? Changing the name of the Hilton and Stirling highway?
This isn't just a piece of "white" history and tradition that's being destroyed, it's a point in Western Australia's history that is essentially being rendered pointless.
    Fuck liberalism.

He says a lot of West Australians would not be able to explain the origins of Foundation Day, which just does not resonate with a lot of people.
A lot of West Australians would not be able to explain the origins of Christmas, so we should rename that too.

I do agree that Aboriginals are not properly recognised by our public holiday system, and there should be a day put aside that they don't have to go to work.
Intelligence and education are three sides of the same coin.

Nothing making them celebrate though is there.
Why is everything that doesn't revolve around a minority's belief set immediately offensive to them?

Most people just think of it as a day off anyway and couldn't give a toss about it's historical meaning. Whatever its name it will be seen simply as a paid day off or a day of double time.
Come back Jeremy, it was only a joke.

For the most part, they have. Any day ending in Y seems to be a holiday for them as far as I can tell, though there appears to be one or two who are heathens and work 5/7 of these holiday, though they are the rare exception in my experience.

Probably not. I bet a lot of people get their knickers in a twist about a meaningless name change to a public holiday.

    Go figure.

I have a great deal of respect for the Nyoongah culture and history but lets celebrate that on its own day.

Foundation Day should recognize the day that some pommie sheila stood in for some other pommie sheila and cut down a tree to start the building of our fine city.

Unless I missed something it wasn't the Aborigines (or any other minority) who called for this, was it?

If it was, and they demanded the name to be changed, I might have a different view.

However, as far as I can see, it was the idea of Colin Barnett, white fella leader of the (conservative) Liberal government.

I think the only news in this is "Colin Barnett and Co. do another dopey thing".

I'm guessing it was some attention-seeking do-gooders. They are doing their level best to fuck this country up.

Heh, they need to improve their attention-seeking skills. They didn't receive any attention in the article, only Barney; "The Premier first mooted the idea several years ago."

i have an aboriginal friend who is currently studying aboriginal studies at curtin. she got into an arguement with the majority of her classmates because they believe they should be allowed unlimited paid leave for cultural purposes.

Yeah, special privileges for minorities isn't on in my book either.

I have a former-farmer friend who sold the farm outside of Merredin in 2007. He got into regular arguments with his neighbours when he said he wasn't going to hold his hand out for the multi-million dollar subsidies the government was paying then so he could sit on his arse all day. His farmer neighbours believed they were entitled to handouts, even though they chose to farm in an area prone to drought for hundreds of years.

The *Cockys took great exception to anyone challenging this belief and to being told that if a small business in the city fails, the owner doesn't get a special handout.

As Desmo says "Why is everything that doesn't revolve around a minority's belief set immediately offensive to them?".

*Don't call them "rurotards", it offends them.

They should have changed the date and the name - or kept it the same. Changing the name but having it at essentially the same day as Foundation Day is pointless. Change it all or keep it the same, stop pussyfooting.
