Over Sold, We have a deicated box a@ PSB with 2500GB a month traffic, think about how they can offer 3000GB for that price?

The way they do it is by putting thousands of accounts onto a server that is designed for probably 50 accounts

mmm that does sound logical. But so what? I mean in real terms what is really going to happen? Are we talking risk of constant down time, slow transfers, general reliability?

The other thing is i assume you'd need to be running some serious stuff to require 3tb of traffic. So its overkill and just a selling point. ?

Yep got it it one, generally your site will be a slug at the best of times. For business use i would pay a little more.

It's easy to hit 3000gb with downloads, just host some full length porn videos. The problem is that CPU time is taxed on the server as it will at anyone time have 50 forums running, a few dozen shopping carts etc etc....

What will you be using the site for?

I think that despite our best wishes for something interesting, in reality we will end up just going for a basic point of presence on the interweb, as we have nothing at the moment. So unless we really pull our fingers out and atempt to set up something fancy, it will be a very basic site.

we will store a bit of data (including large aerial photographs), and thats why the 300gb storage and 3000 of traffic caught my attention. But going by what you've said, if the site is a real slug then it will be painful waiting for really huge photos to load.

    cheers all for the info

To give you example of bandwidth usage, we are doing anywhere between 150 & 250GB a month in bandwith here.

I use bluehost and have no problem at all. Admittedly my site is low traffic and I'm not hosting full length porn movies, but I find the server to be responsive and reliable. I have recommended it to other people and non of them have complained.

Any reasonably modern machine should be able to do 250gb a DAY without hassle given enough network connectivity (static content I mean, obviously scripting will change things and depend on the complexity of your code)

If you're just after a presence on the internet.... does your ISP offer web space? If so, you could get by with a cheap domain rego and URL forwarding - no need for hosting.

I'd be starting with that, and when you run into limitations then start looking at dedicated hosting if required.

Quite a few ii Staff have stuff hosted here if they aren't hosting it themselves.

Go ahead and play the blues if it'll make you happy.

u can host on the PSB box if you like but it will cost around $20 pm.

So on the eight day, after wasting time faffing about with unimportant guff like heaven & earth & the waters & sky & creatures [& having a wee kip] & man.... God created PSB (GenesiSX-R1000)
