    GYM shoes

So it is finally time to buy a new pair of shoes. I am no longer playing any squash or running because of a shit ankle.
I was wondering what everyone wears what their thoughts were ect, any feed back would be sweet

    Cheers Onrails

I live in my asics, current model GT-2160. They have good arch support and gel cushioned soles. Very comfy! I also chuck em in the washing machine to give them a freshen up & they come out sweet as!!

If you will be doing any free weight training (you should be!), you don't want a large squishy sole as found in many running shoes. Think chuck taylors, dunlop volleys... no squish.

I use chuck taylors for all but running. Then I wear asics. Shock absorber shoes only needed for running - the springy effect can reduce the benefits of weight type exercises. But they do reduce wear & tear on the joints.

As others have said it depends on what youre doing.

Dunlops are good for general free weights as Mewnz said, runners etc are too soft most of the time and if you can get a bit of heel lift it can smooth things out abit.

The best thing about volleys is they are $16 from target .. So you can just smash them.

Personally, theres no 1 pair of shoes that do it all perfectly.

I use Asics for outdoor hard surface work (AR, heavy load walking etc), Inov8s for general gym work, vibram soled shoes for crossfitting and Addidas for olympic lifting/power lifting work.

I also have a couple of pairs of dunlops for just GD work.

I dont run but thats due to injury so I dont consider running in my considerations.

Absolutely 100% agree. Incredible for lifting in, and pretty damn sweet for crosstraining, I hear. But beware the OSH jellyfish. Curtin gym won't let you wear them (so I quit in disgust).

whatever pair you get, make sure they're fit for purpose and for your feet. i got a pair of adidas adizeros on offer and they seem ok to me for the most part of gym work, but if you're planning to hit the treadmill and pound hard, you'll want good sole and arch support. there are different varieties of soles (something i didn't know previously).

The only thing I found with the Vibrams 5 fingers was if you needed to tape your feet up they were tricky.

I found a pair of these in Singapore earlier this year

Merrell | Store | Barefoot True Glove

Vibram sole, but with a full toe ... after a fair amount of use I really like them. Just another option if you dont like the monkey foot look

My son had some Adizero Crazy Lights, he loved them but the cushioning was lost quite quickly. He now trying those light weight Nike Hyperdunks so it will be interesting to see if they last a bit longer. I'm thinking super light weight and longevity are never going to go together (motorcycles included!)

I wear Nike Frees every day in the Gym as well I find them great for casual stuff like training but I wouldnt recomend them for running as the edge of the sole is very square and the side wall of the she is very weak so when you roll your ankle it has a serious chance of being an injury.

sweet! yeah I fucked my ankle at the start of the year (drunk at netsky) did a full thickness tear of an anterior ligament couldn't walk for over a month still can not run dumb ass I know...

So yeah all I will be doing is free weights and I am able to do box jumps so I am looking at getting into xfit. So the Vibrams interest me a lot, without doing some research what is the going rate for a pair? does anyone know a website that does good deals on them?

Just get them from the US, they will be about 70-130bucks, over here you are looking at 2-3 times that.

Make sure you read up or watch the videos on how to measure your foot properly as the size will be different to what you normally wear. Check out birthdayshoes.com for a shitload of info on all things vibram.

vibram 5 fingers ftw, good for everything, although you may suffer from shin splints running on hard surfaces with them e.g pavement, road etc as it isn't a natural surface.

Sarbear - boxing in a ring boxing ? Or boxing in a normal gym/training enviroment?

Just with the vibrams, if you go that route look into barefoot running programs before you just go out and try and smash out miles in them. Barefoot is very different .. And although its more natural in theory you will still need to adapt your body to it to avoid further injury.

Of course your comments stand for anyone else swapping over and intending to rack up the miles.

It is more natural, full stop.
    No theory about it.
Although I agree with what you say on the adjusting into them.
