THE internet is celebrating a special landmark today - the 25th anniversary of the day the first dotcom name was registered.

On March 15, 1985, Symbolics Computer Company of Cambridge, Massachusetts entered the history books with the address "Symbolics.com".

Just five other companies joined the dotcom revolution that year, The Sun reported.

Mark Mclaughlin, chief executive officer of Verisign, the company that is responsible for looking after the dotcom domain, said, "This birthday is really significant because what we are celebrating here is the internet.

"Who would have guessed 25 years ago where the internet would be today. "
