anyone else have problem or know how to fix?

Having the same problem, for over a week now.
Thought it was me.
I have no solution though, sorry.
Is there an error at all?
If not I'd say that the server is just overloaded.
Go here and see if you can download and install the update manually.
If that fails install Avast! as it is clearly superior.
AVG is working fine for me. The automatic updates are working, and I just tried a manual update and that worked too.
The only time I have ever had an issue with it updating is immediately after running a Windows update, but even that sorts itself out eventually.

google the error or check on AVG, there's usually a corrupted CTF file, and all it needs is deleteing.

There is a new free version coming out, they usually cut off the older one to force people to migrate.
But not yet, I can still update fine.

I've also had problems before with AVG if the computer date/time is out of wack. May be worth checking that as well.

I got notification after an update about a month ago saying that maintenance for AVG 7.5 (or whatever version) was ending and that I had to update/upgrade to AVG 8 to continue to get virus updates.
What version are you running?

I had to update mine to Version 8.5 when I renewed the license and it said about no support for older versions...
reinstalled AVG 8.5, when tried to do update at end of install, same thing came up. connection with update server failed.

Sounds like you have another issue there other than AVG. Can you view pages on the internet at all ?
On a side note, I had 7.5 for quite some time which i was happy with, then due to no more support I updated to 8.5 and found that it really killed the performance of my PC. Any other found this to be an issue ?
I use Comodo, free, great firewall and decent antivirus (their first version sucked but version 2 rocks).
Oh and very system friendly.
It might be worth turning your firewall off just temporarily to test if this is what is blocking the avg update. (Remember to turn it back on again!)
Can you ping avg.free.com from the command prompt?

Doesn't things like the conficker worm try to block access to anti-virus sites?

Yeah we have the same problem, since the upgrade everything is slower due to the fact it scans all the links for bad sites
Also have had problems with updates and most of the time doing it manually worked, another way I was told was to completely uninstall AVG and reinstall the latest 8.5, seems OK now (apart from the slow down of the computer)

+1 for using Comodo if you're considering a switch.
I keep getting a message to upgrade to 8.5 by April 30 to continue with updates
