most likely cleartype fonts have been enabled
what kind of monitor do you have spock?
(AFAIK there is application level control over cleartype fonts and system wide -> mine is turned on for the entire system)
EDIT:

according to this your LCD (i assume you are using an LCD, cleartype fonts dont work on CRT's afaik) may require some tuning to get things to look correct. There are links on there on how to tune)
if you dont like the cleartype font at all (i do, its awesome) then instructions are on there on how to turn it off and return things to normal
As pkunk said, that'd be cleartype.
You should be able to turn it off by going to TOOLS->Advanced Tab
And under there is a check box for "allow cleartype for HTML*" or something similar. Make sure it's UNTICKED, ok your way out and restart IE
EDIT: Pkunk, thye do work on CRTs and give me a headache as they make the fonts blurry as opposed to anti-aliasing them on an LCD.

Make sure you're running at your monitors native resolution to give it a good chance too. Regardless of CRT or LCD.

Thanks for the suggestions guys,As pkunk said, that'd be cleartype.

It was the "cleartype for HTML" that was the problem as I am using a CRT monitor. Once I unchecked it and restarted IE7 - problem was gone!
Thanks again!
