    Insurance for Personal Belongings

So, I want to insure a few things (camera, laptop and phone). They're not overly costly, but I'd like the piece of mind, none the less.

I've been looking on insurance sites and I've tried Google.
But, I guess, being young and having no real experience with this particular issue, i dont know what to look for, or if it is possible to insure just those things?

Apologies for the stupid questions and also, if this has been asked before.

Just looking for some advice, please

Check out Western QBE - 'Valuables' Insurance.

I think they cover individual items up to something like $500 in value per item to a total claim of about $3000.

And you can individually specify more expensive items with receipts and serial numbers etc.

Superior contents cover is what you should get, say $10,000 should do it. Try cgu and get a $100

    Do you live at home?
I have renters insurance, so covers my belongings in the house only, with several items listed as 'portable'
this is jewellery, camera, laptop, etc.

Or as an addition to your standard contents insurance, you can list additional items which are "mobile" (go with you to work, in the car, in your purse/wallet etc).

Thanks for that advice! It seemed perfect for what I needed

Except they won't let you do it without getting contents insurance

    Good advice though

I'm living in my Mum's house, which makes it a bit difficult. (She lives with her partner)
So I don't need to do contents insurance as it's all hers...

Why dont you get your mother to enquire about having the portable valuables cover included on her policy and you pay the difference?

oh if you live with your mum thats easy then, just make sure that she has home and contents insurance and that accidental damage is covered and your all sweet. If any item is over $5000 its advisable to have it noted on the policy

Insuremyride have 2 extra options - Bike gear insurance and personal items insurance. Values from $500 to $5000. I added $2000 bike gear and $2000 personal items to my policy and it cost me an extra $100. Motorcycle Insurance Australia | Motor Bike Insurance | InsureMyRide

Yeah HBF offer SPecified Valuables and Unspecified Valuables policies, but again have to be attached to a contents policy
The Unspecified valuables policy lets you claim upto $1500 per item and a total of $7500 per claim, only cost like $230 to attach to my home and contents.

Already said....Sounds like you should speak to your mum to get her to take it out on her contents insurance, and you could pay the difference.

Make sure you read all the fine print. For example, HBF unspecified valuables is only covered within Australia. Others will cover you world wide. Also ensure the excess is quite low, otherwise you arent really going to bother claiming most the time.

    Thanks guys,

Unfortunately I can't go through my Mum for the insurance. Which is good, since I really should be fending for myself by now I'm sure I'll find something if I look hard enough :p

You have all been very helpful and I will take everything into account

sharn you dont need to go through your mum. if she has superior contents insurance and you live with her your stuff is covered simple as that, you need to add.anything to the policy at all
if she only has executive/listed events cover you should upgrade it to superior/accidental damage cover so your stuff is covered. i set my mum up with superior contents cover a few months ago and then a couple of weeks ago my phone got water damaged whilst on my bike so i claimed it through her contents insurance. its not hard
