It's better to be thought stupid than open your mouth and remove all doubt
Pure speed in sixth gear on a 5,000 foot straightaway is one thing, but pure speed in third gear on a gravel-strewn, downhill, ess turn is quite another.

As above. Download the app. Plug your iPad in to your PC. Open iTunes. Click on Apps. Scroll down. Click on AVPlayer. Drag & drop your movies into the box on the right and wait until it installs. Very easy.
I use DVD to iPad Converter.
edit: looks like apple took vlc down. damn
Buzz player. Share a folder on PC, browse to it in player, select copy to ipad. Play whenever you like. Streaming from shares works very well too. No need to convert or use iTunes at all.

Sorry to hijack but in a similar vein how do you go about checking emails from an iPad that normally go through Windows/Outlook account? Missus was given an iPad from work and it has an email service called iCloud (seems like Hotmail/Livemail) but unless something is sent to that address we get nothing
She can access Outlook via her HTC Desire and we can use our Live account with the laptop we have or the phones but have no real idea when it comes to Apple stuff

First thing you need to work out is how the mail is handled (i.e. what server/service). Outlook is just a client. The mail account will be either POP3 (only one device at a time - notwithstanding Googles ability to deliver to multiple devices), IMAP which supports multiple devices (but is ugly) or a system like Gmail, Google Apps or a host exchange account.
iCloud is simply a sync tool. Mail gets delivered to work, is uploaded to iCloud and then all sync devices get a copy.
The iPad can be set up to get mail from all of the above. If you're using Live, or Gmail (including Google Apps) then you can use the Exchange connector. If the account is also setup as a POP3 on the Outlook machine, thing will get messy quickly.

Hmmm OK, I think it is via POP3 on the 2 desktops and the laptop from memoryNot sure how she gets it on the HTC, don't remember setting anything up
I do have a Live account which I used on the lappy before we bought Office for the new desktop and loaded it on the laptop so I guess we could just use that if trying to use Outlook is going to be a problem as the Live.com.au account gets all the same emails as we get via Outlook![]()

I have a Bigpond address which uses POP3 and a couple of work address using IMAP. If you know your settings, such as usernames and passwords and server addresses (such as mail.bigpond.com for example), you can set any email up on any device.
The thing to get right though is whether it leaves the message on server. With IMAP, if you receive the mail on one device, you can still see it on all other devices. If you then delete it from one device, it's also deleted from all the other devices. With POP3 if you receive it on one device, you won't be able to receive it on any others UNLESS you set up that device so that it does not remove the item from the server once downloaded. I have mine set up so that only my main computer removes the item, but all the others just leave it there. Trouble with this is that you have to delete files on each device once they're downloaded.
I'm sure I haven't explained that very well, and I know there are others out there with FAR more knowledge than me, but I hope it helped in some way![]()

Para045 - Sounds like you might have a forward on to your Live account. Once you have multiple accounts of various protocols and with forwards turned on, it all gets a bit complicated. We (my business so being careful not to sell anything) offer our customers (businesses and personal) a service where we migrate all their mail to a hosted solution, have that host collect all their mail from various sources, and deliver it to all their devices in a uniformed and synchronised manner. It's a much, much neater way to go.

Para - if she was given the pad by work, just get work to setup the email for her. Presumably if they gave it to her, they want her to use it, so let them faff about with it. If you know all the settings (which obviously they will), it will take seconds to configure.

There is no offence under Australian law that criminalises the act of arriving in
Australia or the seeking of asylum without a valid visa.
It should be fairly simple.
I have my work email (outlook) set up on my iPad/iPhone using exchange. I don't use iCloud.
Just go in to settings, mail, add account, Microsoft Exchange...
Type your works email eg: Para045@PSB.com.au
Username is the the exact same as above.
Type in your password.
It will then ask for your server so type in eg: mail.psb.com.au.
It should work fine after that and will sync to your computer and other devices too that have it set up.
The "mail.Bigpond.com" thing sounds familiar from what I remember when the missus set it up on the old computer and we changed from OptusWe get all the emails downloaded onto not only the 9 yr old computer but the new desktop and the laptop and her HTC as well and deleting them off one doesn't affect the others
It's a real pain in the arse sometimes as the old computer is only used occasionally by the missus for some accounts due to MYOB being linked to a particular machine a bit like I believe iTunes is and it takes for ever to download them all
Can't remember exactly, took a while to set it up but the Live.com acc accesses the same emails as Outlook and as above I can send/delete them separately. I set it up before we got Office and Outlook on the new comp and lappyI hardly use the Live.com email apart from on my old bunky LG mobile occasionally
Wasn't for use FOR work as such, the other office guy is an iFag (waits in the early morning at the Apple store to get every new release product etc) so as a early Xmas "bonus" he bought him and the missus the iPads, she would really have preferred the $900 odd cash than an iPad
She doesn't really use it for work as she prefers using desktops and a mouse (long term secretarial habits) and the couple of games she plays need Flash so it's uselessOh and her boss has no idea how the things work (just the 3 of them), he just buys new stuff when something stuffs up

Thanks for that, I'll need to have a play and see what I can figure out, much like with the other emails I guess, just trial and error

i have been using Oplayer on my iphone and Ipad for a while now, and it plays most files with no problem. Only one I had some problems is mkv files. I can play the smaller MKV files with no problems but anything about 500mb+ (mostly HD movies) would cause it to loose synch with audio. The nice part is that you can just install it, and when plug into your PC, you can synch it straight away without much messing around with converting, or you can also upload files through WiFi (too bad only one file at a time, and no queuing) there is a free version for this, but has a little add on top of it which you probably can live with.
Another one I use is Air Video, but it requires you to install a decoder/converter/whatever on your PC to convert the files to play on your Ipad/Iphone... no issues with it at all with what ever file formats I have thrown at it.
Both costs a few dollars to buy... well worth it I say...
