Nah, no turn by turn navigation... yet.
It will ask you to connect to any wireless networks it finds when you try to send/receive data before falling back to 3G.
If you are on wireless the little "normal" apple wireless logo displays in the top bar.

hmmm any idea why they're so against voice nav? half the point i thought was so that you can drive without having to fuck with the phone (ie, set up route, put phone down and just listen)
?
edit:
ahh cheers nath, so it does. just realised it normally has "3g" there or something yeah?
desmo: yeah i could analyse packets. i shouldn't have to tho, this is an apple device

My personal opinion is it was just held back... it is possible however the google map data is not adequate for the purpose.
There have been plenty of rumors of them working with the major player in that space for a port of their software though.
Its still a very useful piece of software in its own right, Some big new features coming in the next revision also so I am told.

^^ ahh makes sense. if they're going to release an officially sanctioned voice nav then yeah, they wouldn't want their customers buying some third party shit...

Opinion is the 2.0 software was rather rushed.. it does have a number of little bugs and missing features... For something that is only going to get better its pretty damn impressive..
Btw.. I get somewhere around 1-2 days from a charge.. not exactly great.. but I do use it quite a bit, lots of Email/Web/Music

You can assign mp3's as ringtones just not as an sms alert, just need a 40 sec chunk of sound to import into itunes as a ringtone. This is easier with a mac as you can use Garageband to cut your sounds out, then import them straight into itunes, then just sync. Make sure you use the import as ringtone option. Also noticed ringtones don't seem to appear in itunes until you import one.
You can tell if you're on the Wi-fi by looking at the top left of the iphone status bar, where you'll see a Wi-fi symbol and the moving circle if there's current network activity.
By the way I'm very happy with my iphone. Work got it for me, but if they hadn't I'd have got one anyway as I use a macbook pro at work and it's sync's nicely with it. Had a blackberry previously which was also a very good work phone.

You know what I find kind of funny?
Every other high end electrical application uses seperate componentry to enhance the quality of the product (eg, High end Hifi, IT, etc, etc.) but the mobile phone market seem to have all the high end devices are the ones with as many features crammed into them as possible.
What ever just happened to having a phone that worked as a telecommunications device? And then if you wanted to listen to music you have an iPod. And if you wanted to take photo's you had a camera. And if you're lost you have a gps device or a map.
It dawned on me, as good as my N95 is as a phone, it's a shitty MP3 player and a very average digicam and an extremely average GPS...

well, yeah, it's an N95 dood whaddya expect?
It's a 1st generation attempt at integrating mass PDA/PMM/Nav functionality into a phone and it sucks.
Give 'em a couple years to get it right. Personally I think the touch screen + screen based keyboard is a big step in the right direction.

I am.
In a couple years, Apple may get it right too!
For all the stuff that's missing on the 3G and shouldn't be, for all the shitty shortcomings of it, blah blah blah...
Apple were the first to get a capacitive touch driven UI out there with the iPod.
There were others using the Synaptics pads before, but it took Apple to get the technology into the mainstream.
Apple were the first to extend that and overlay with the screen with the iPod Touch. Others are just now following.
There have been PDAs with phone support around for years (I had one of the early XDA phones in 2003 for example) but they've never taken off - because, frankly, they sucked arse as a phone.
Apple got in there and made the concept usable, and again, got the touchscreen pda/phone combo into the mainstream. Let's face it, the iPhone isn't much more than the Touch with a GPS and a 3G chipset squeezed onto the board, a few extra drivers in the O/S and a phone app. But it's slick and easy to use, and it has appeal.
Now others are coming on board.
Whilst, for me, the relatively low support of the iPhone for stuff I want to do is a bit of a killer, huge kudos to Apple for dragging the status quo along.
But I'll wait for a phone with better functionality, thanks. Then I'll wait for Apple to drag the masses to the next mini-leap in technology, and for people to improve on it again.

Always want more don't you..
If god himself designed a phone you would still find something that doesn't meet your high standards or not standard requirements..

Dude,
Its not meant to REPLACE every single device it has functions for.
Its more so that if you want to pack light, you don't need to carry around an mp3 player, a phone, a laptop, a camera, a gps, a modem, etc, etc, etc and all the associated chargers and power adapters to go with it (if travelling internationally).
The quality is a trade-off of space/expense vs features.
I'm quite happy to have a shitty phone camera, gps, email client, etc if it means that i can use them in a pinch without lugging around 5-10kg worth of extra gear.

Yeah.
That's it in a nutshell...
I'm talking about how the high-end of mobiles have as much crap crammed into them. It's just so different from everything else is all I'm saying...
