exactly, SMS works flawlessly like that, why can't MMS?

because the networks and phone manafacturers can't agree on how to implement it - they all want to add in their own special customized way of accessing MMS images so they can charge you, meter your usage and price customers accordingly

most phones before the iphone were crippled to the extreme in order to squeeze more money out of customers, ringtones, wallpapers, themes, wake up calls, mms, sms notifications - all cost huge amounts

the iphone is really just a small computer with cellphone data network, how much does it cost me to send an email with a 2MP image on it with my iphone?

$0.00

UK/US plans include unlimited internet (I'm in the UK)

the Australia iPhone plans are pretty braindead, given it's meant to be an internet device

i dont think u understand how mms actually works.

its quite similar to the email concept in terms of you need to tell it which server to use. then u need to the the phone how to access the data network.

the only thing that is customised about of accessing mms is the specific server that each mobile network uses. you enter it, end of story.

as for why it isnt pre-configured on your phone...well thats the providers being slack. its not a function of mr nokia or mr samsung not correctly implementing mms on your phone.

if i buy an iphone from vodafone or whoever, will i be able to take it out the box, turn it on and automatically be able to send/receive email?

Every phone I've had, you call up, or go on the net, and get the config sent to your phone, you click ok on it and it "works"

Doesn't work though

Hey its not the iPhone owners fault that 99% of the new phones out there are internet accessible but are an absolutely pain in the ass to use. Why should Apple bother implementing the outdated MMS when there are far more simpler alternatives

When work bought our iPhones (from optU$) they set them up before they left the shop using the sim out of my old blackberry. Everything worked out of the box. We did have to hand over our sims for an hour though.

Sure if you got an email address with your service provider they could do that. But most people want to use their existing email address so you have to enter your server address, username and password.

I'm not saying iPhone shouldn't support MMS, people still use it. But email will make it obsolete.

No, the SDK will only work on Macs.

Or a virtual machine.

In all seriousness Apple, WTF?
Way to fuck up the concept of an open SDK guise...
Aren't you meant to encourage people to develop apps, no punish them for wanting to?

ha! You poor misguided fools. Where is the money for apple in letting you make software?

There's a reason they do so much in-house software, now that they're paying somebody else for hardware they gotta afford those lattes and skivvies somehow

Not quite correct...

Some applications do run in the background... for example the email client is always running and will alert you when email is pushed to your phone.
