iTunes is the most fuck-awful playlist management system I've ever used. If I generate a playlist, I want that fucking playlist imported *as is* onto my mobile device. Don't fuck-ass around with it and re-organise via seemingly random protocols.
It seriously can't seem to do a fucking thing right. It's resource hungry, ugly and painfully slow. There are no plus points to it at all.

Features such as applications downloads, online synchronisation and email would be available on certain prepay plans, he said.

You call it 'integrated experience', I call it 'locked in'. Someone above said you have to register your iPhone with iTunes before you can use it properly? Sheesh.
My take: These sorts of electronic gadgets were the domain of geeks/nerds who bought based on specifications and price. I think apple are doing well now selling to people who don't understand specifications and don't care about the price as long as it looks good and comes close to doing what they want. Good on them I suppose. *shrug*

You use iTunes on Windows, don't you?
I fucking hated iTunes on Windows.

You have to register your iphone with itunes if you want to use it an a media player as well as a phone - just like you have to register an ipod with itunes to use it. Its one of the things they have to do to keep there store running basically!
I've never had any problems with itunes. i've used it since version 1 and i dont even have an ipod.
You've got to realise that when the ipod was first released it was so so much better than anything one the market (in its price range) and they have kept most of the styling cues and concepts through the range(until the touch) so that they dont confuse the masses and it is instantly recognisable as an ipod!
Got to remember most people that buy them arent tech savvy at all, to them ipod = music player, and will just get confused if you try and tell them about the differences in MP3, AAC, OGG, WMA...etc
Someone mentioned that they want to to just come up as a removable drive. they do and you canuse it as a data storage device if you want.

I'm not generally an Apple Fanboy, but I AM a gadgetman. I've had MANY (I'm not kidding) different brands of MP3 player from the very 1st iterations of them, and the only brand I keep coming back to is Apple. The iPods really do have their shit sorted. iTunes isn't as shit awful as you guys are making it out to be either. I used to try to fight the machine and use things such as Yamipod or whatever, but in the end, iTunes does it all better, faster and more streamlined, and if you think it's a resource hog, then get more ram. It's memory footprint is actually quite small.
The touch screen interface on the iPod Touch and the iPhone is second to none. Don't delude yourself, currently there's not a consumer product out there with a better touch screen interface. It supports multiple tactile points too, unlike a swathe of other products which can't handle more than 1 point of contact on the screen.
The iPhone is well built too. They're sturdy, nigh on shockproof, and wear well even with heavy daily use.
I'm totally getting a 3G iPhone, and selling my 16GB Touch and current personal phone (LG u990 Viewty), thus rolling 2 devices into 1.
I'd hazard a guess that the iPhone CAN'T be used as a flashdrive like iPods in the past, unless they changed their policy recently. The latest iPods (the Touch series) no long have Disc Drive capacity like their earlier brethren. (ie: the can't be plugged into usb and have anything shoved on them)

Funny you should say that...
Ref cnet article:
Quote:
According to our sources at O2, Brits who want to buy a 3G iPhone are going to have to sign up to a contract before they can get their hands on one, wherever they buy it. This is seriously bad news for people eager to unlock their new iPhone, as you're not going to be able to buy one for the discounted contract price and then unlock it.
If you don't want to get tied to a contract you'll have to choose the pay-as-you-go option, which hasn't been priced yet but is likely to be more than a couple of hundred quid. Either way, unlockers are going to be stuck between a hard place and a rock. The choice is clear: sign up to a contract or splash some cash on a pay as you go handset.
|
And ref engadget.com Both ATT in the US and O2 in the UK are implementing the new activation system on July 11th, when the iPhone 3G goes on sale.

Yep, ActiveSync is a "feature" of the V2 iPhone. i'll leave it to you as to whether that's a good thing or not.

If anyone is interested in the whole GPS on mobile phones feature, the Nokia N96 has stand-alone GPS with support for aGPS. This means that it doesn't need to be connected to a mobile network or any other device for the GPS to work.

Or, if they're the same as the N95, the pain of using that god-awful mapping software that needs a connection ($$) for doing live navigation.
If I could get updated maps for my Nokia 6600 (old school symbian) running TomTom with the bluetooth GPS module, I'd just keep it.
But TomTom have stopped providing maps for this software AFAIK so I'm running out of time with this combo.
Waiting for a 6110 equivalent with WiFi so I can use it with VOIP as a home phone too.
The 3G IPhone, the SE X1 (oh yeah) are looking promising.
I'd take a peek at the blackberry, but anything that ever had a poxy keyboard and proudly relied on its RIMming technology in the past is just, well, ghey.

TLDR much of thread.
From what the Apple rep has told me, Vodaphone and Telstra have the contracts, stand alone units will not be sold through stores, only on contracts. But then again, Apple are DICKS when it comes to information regarding products.
3g = assy. Buy a US iPhone with a metal finish for more durability and exactly the same features, Jailbreak it and unlock it to any network and then set up edge if you want roaming intarwebs. Easy as pie.
Touch screen is fine, been using mine for a couple of months now and have no issues with it. Only difficulties were putting custom ringtones on and ripping contacts off of sim.
pZ.
ps. as if pay for any applications. www.ziphone.com my friends.
