Touch screen is fine, been using mine for a couple of months now and have no issues with it. Only difficulties were putting custom ringtones on and ripping contacts off of sim.

Vodafone and Optus have the contracts. Telstra are not selling it at this stage.
As far as the metal finish/more durability... Thats only if you don't care about 3G. All 3G iPhones are plastic, which also helps with radio pickup apparently as well as data speeds obviously. The 2G ones had the metal finish, and are slower. I'd take a faster one with better reception personally
Here is to hoping that Optus/Voda get off their asses and produce some pricing schedules for us soon...
And then we can jailbreak it and unlock it to use on other networks.

My take: These sorts of electronic gadgets were the domain of geeks/nerds who bought based on specifications and price. I think apple are doing well now selling to people who don't understand specifications and don't care about the price as long as it looks good and comes close to doing what they want. Good on them I suppose. *shrug*

This is coming from a Windows users perspective.
Personally, on a Mac, iTunes is the single best audio application I have used.
On the PC I hear it is fucking dire.
If y iPhone needs to sync with my Mac/iTunes to work properly, I welcome it to.

Oh my god if I hear the word "iphone" one more time, I will kill whoever says it with a pen. Every second customer.
Them "Do you know anything about the iphone?"
Me "No sorry. Only that its release date is July 11, that's all we know so far"
Them "So any idea how much it will be upfront?"
Me "... dude... I just said I don't know any more then the release date"
Them "Which one are you getting?"
Me "... get the fuck out... are you serious!?"
ARRRRGGGHHHH!!!!!!

So when are you getting the iPhone?
As yet Telstra have not announced they are carrying it, if at all, so I don't know.
Oh, so when is it coming out?
Uh, it will be out on Vodafone and Optus on the 11th.
How much?
They haven't made any announcements yet.
So what plans will it be on?
Did you hear me the first time?
Will it be available pre paid? How much will it be outright?
...You're kidding right? This is a set up? Where are the cameras? You are talking to a Telstra Dealer about a phone that has not been released yet and has not even been announced as planning to be released by Telstra. I have told you everything I know about the iPhone, more than I even needed to considering I will not be selling it. You are not listening. DIAF!

Yup... I'm making up signs to wear around our necks saying "We only know the release date of the Iphone and knowing us, even THAT will be delayed or incorrect so please... save your time AND mine and don't ask me any questions about the FUCKING IPHONE! Thanking you kindly."
Or when a customer asks about it, I'll just cup my ears and start going "lalalalalalala I can't hear you lalalalalalala"... that might be more effective.

Well to correct myself, Telstra have announced it today... They are releasing it on July 11 like everyone else.
Still no pricing, but at least I can tell customers we are getting it instead of saying we aren't and getting "why?" in return. How the hell would I know??!
So yeah, iPhone on Telstra, Vodafone and Optus thus far.
Yes, it is Next G compatible for those of you playing at home.

Telstra announced the iPhone 3G would cost $279 for the 8GB model or $399 for the 16GB model on a monthly $30 plan.
However the iPhone 3G will cost nothing upfront if you choose the 8GB iPhone 3G on an $80 monthly plan or the 16GB model on a $100 monthly plan.

Telstra didn't announce anything officially... Those prices are rumored and not official...
Not saying they aren't true... But they aren't official.
Edit: If your source was the gadget guy for pricing, I would take his opinions with a grain of salt. About the only true thing in that article was the release on Telstra... He is a clown.
Official Telstra page.
