John Butler a sellout ; discuss

I dropped the ball on this but I found this gem:

John Butler a top seller despite illegal downloads | The Courier-Mail

Now I LOATHE John Butler because I have always firmly believed he was a "dirty stinking hippie sellout". Now all I need to do is catch a good wiff of him to find out of his smells...

So Mr Butler what are you gonna do huh? Whinge? Or perhaps follow a more progressive business model (Radiohead and NIN are 2 examples).

Furthermore can you cite evidence that people who "downloaded" did not pay for your work? I bet you can't even track firm figures on who downloaded simply due to the nature of the beast

    Aria charts are broken anyway.

They're not based on street sales, they're based on wholesaler orders, and when a minimum order for a single store might be 100 units, it's dead easy to make the numbers anything you want.

Also, I really dislike Butler, but a sell out? I'm not sure why anybody making money off something they do is selling out, I just think his personal politics are up to shit and he should die choking on a cock, but he isn't a sell out.

Also, Trent Reznor could beat the fuck out of him with both hands tied behind his back.

I think just a evil stare from Reznor would do the trick.

Meh, Metallica were the same... bottom line is they got a bit too greedy. At least the drummer did any how (I forget the Little Squirts name) Does this make them sellouts?..They were still one of the Best bands of all time. Im sure most bands have a little winge from time to time... bottom line is, if it wasnt for the internet im sure either of these bands wouldnt be as successful as they are.

I nearly reversed over John Butler and his kid the other day. I reversed out of my driveway and he had to jump out the way.

    I missed a golden opportunity i think

Maybe he was rushing to get his hair done before the next concert/photoshoot. You know that hair is expensive to keep up (proper dreadlocks are!)

I'd be pretty shitty if people scored my work for free too.

    Lame troll

Please quantify the amount of lost earnings when nothing was "taken" or "stolen" whilst downloading John Butlers latest album.

    Solutions :

    1) John Butler needs to stop spouting rhetoric from his record label. I suspect this will be difficult since he is as pointed out earlier a "dirty stinking hippie sellout".

    2) Try a new business model (maybe even have sex with her, har har )

    3) Jump up and down and complain to no effect (i.e. stay the course)

Funnily enough downloading an illicit copy of his work is not theft so I fail to see how that is $20 still

Are you as liberal towards people using your own work? If you'd made some program which made your job so much easier, then the guy next to you notices and you send him a copy, just between you two. If he then emails it to the entire company and soon enough every person working there has it as standard and all you get for it is a smile when you'd put hours of work in, wouldn't you be pissed?

You overhear in the background: "Hey that's cool, where'd you buy that?".. "Don't worry, I'll just make you a copy."

Point is, JB already gets PAID and has much $$ already due to sales, hes just having a dummy spit because he cant have all the cake at the party. I would say, "look dude your filthy rich already, your not exactly hard done by, and yer it sucks but what can you do about it?... welcome to the 21st century."

Bad analogy Taylor. For the following issues : its called Open Source software. I've worked on some. Yes it has been released for free. So where is your analogy now huh? And to further break your analogy down, since you wrote this app while at work presumably you were paid whilst sitting at work? And since you wrote it on company time, guess who owns it? (hint : its not you)

    Moving on...

Pkunk's viewpoint is that in an age when anything can be copied, the business models of the music industry in general needs to be reworked. Infact I even cite some examples where artists have made a difference rather than whining like Mr Butler here.

Can anyone comfirm if John Butler has his stuff on iTunes?

Given the fact he already is a fairly big "name" I think he would do better following Radiohead or NIN in simply giving away the album and taking "tips/donations"...

So it's alright to Robin Hood people better off than you?

If you've got a executable on your thumb drive you made at home to make work easier. Expand your mind to the possibilities.

Dude you fail at English. You say you beg to "differ", I never said it was not illegal, I simply state it is not theft. Its copyright infringement.

    Now get back on topic

actually, it's called piracy, which is defined as an act of robbery. thus theft.

okay, so he has his music encrypted and uses DRM to prevent "piracy".

i'm sure you'll be "happy" that he's changed his business model then?
