So, recently sick of being a fat fucker, I have been getting back into a decent lifestyle pattern. Excersize wise I've been riding a fair bit, walking a tonne, jogging a bit at home and doing some minor weights (nothing massive, I need to tone, not bulk).

I'm feeling a million times better, getting fitter and generally it's coming along nicely. The love handles are slowly vanishing and I'm getting tone back in spots that had long since turned to jelly, so things are moving along nicely, but I am just don't seem to be losing any actual weight. The body is reshaping nicely, which I am stoked with, but ideally I don't just want to tone up, I also want to slim down.

I'm not touching take-out as a general rule (we might be really lazy and grab something junk-like once a fortnight) I think I'm generally eating right and am not overdoing anything, so I why isn't my body shedding weight? I understand that muscle weighs more than fat, which is a good thing but I really do want to trim down.

I've tried some pretty savage fasting / slimming programs in conjunction with the other training, but I feel bloody awful when I do it and barely have the energy to get out of bed.

Is maybe a vegetarian menu worth trying for a few months? I'm not adverse to being even stricter with the diet, but at the same time I don't want to lose the energy I'm feeling through not eating right.

So, any tips from the fitness gurus? Why the hell am I toning up but the numbers just aren't going down!

1st and foremost) You don't make friends with salad.

2) Unless you adopt a diet with enough calories worthy of bulking, you will not bulk. Train as hard as you can. You will shed fat, and gain definition. Sound like 'toning' to you?

3) Why do you want to lose 'weight'? Sounds like loser talk to me. Unless you're fretting over power to weight on your bike, forget about it. A kilo of muscle is about the size of your fist. A kilo of fat is about the size of your head. You don't have to gain that much muscle to make up for all the fat you just lost, get me?

4) If you want to look at numbers, start getting your body fat index taken. Skin folds. Waist measurements.

5) Please list 3 random days meals, everything inclusive. Any 3 days from the previous 7.

6) If you start eating vegetarian crap, I will punch you.

7) Congrats on the results you've been seeing.

Cut your portion sizes down but increase the frequency of meals, aim for about 6 meals a day.

Go for things like chicken and lean cuts of steak with a large serving of vegies. Eggs are awesome too, I have omelettes on a regular basis, they are quick as and tasty to boot (throw some tomatoes, chicken pieces, mushrooms and a sprinkling of cheese in with a couple of eggs). Protein shakes are mint as well, good for in-between meals and they come in some great flavours. For snacks I tend to go for nuts, fruit (dried and fresh) and celery/carrot sticks as well as protein bars every now and again. Oh and don't touch soft drinks, if you must have a sugarfree one.

I tend to get to the gym about 3 times a week for 45 minute sessions and also play floorball on Monday nights for some extra cardio.

I've been doing this and eating bloody good for the last 5 months and thus far I have gone from 92kgs down to 75kgs.

Quitting alcohol is still one thing I'm working towards, but when I do hit the piss I try to do a big time work-out the next day.

Now I just have to work on bulking up a bit, that is, increasing my calorie intake and focusing on more gym visits with more weights involved.

Lee has some awesome tips, see my thread here for some of them.

Nice going dude, you may not make too many friends if you stick to a healthy diet but you will definitely be around for much longer to spend time with the few good one remaining. And less of a burden on the public health system.
As for losing weight, it's not a numbers game rather than composition. Most people get excited about losing a few kilos whilst in reality they're just dehydrated. Remember if you've been doing some weights and gained a litlle muscle it weighs far more than fat. So as lee said check out your fat %, that's where you should be concentrating.
Most important tip: Do not skip brekky. (wheat bix or similar preferred vs sugary cereals or bacon)

Definitely a good point there, you need food ASAP after waking up to get that metabolism going. I have been eating oatmeal for the last 3 months pretty much every morning, just plain old 100% oats, some water and a squirt of honey (doesn't taste the best but bloody cheap though).

If you find it difficult, break it down a bit. I can't stomach too much early in the morning. I wake up and eat a bananna. Cycle to work, then hit a big bowl of oats with honey.

Yup it's bloody hard but if you force yourself for a couple of weeks you will wake up hungry eventually. I used to hate having breakfast especially when it wasn't the sunday morning 'works' but it didn't take long to break the habit.
Also, if you want to do wonders for your metabolism and avoid the sugar spikes try substituting as much of the white stuff with brown stuff (bread, rice, pasta, corn flakes). You'll be surprised to know that carbs aren't bad for ya as the fad diets suggest as long as you have the good carbs. White tastes better but from exprience it only takes about 2 weeks to break a habit and in the long it'll become instinctive.

try walking in the morning for half hour, a brisk walk, take a bottle of water with half a fresh lemon squeezed in it!!

that will kickstart your metabolism.

As Lee said, really you should not owrry about your weight, just your fat% and body shape!

What everyone has said will get you heading in the right direction. Just be aware that what works for one type of person doesn’t always work for others as well. Your body is a smart and adaptive machine. So you may get results from one diet/exercise change and then sometime later find you plateau, then you just need to make some changes and it will start adapting again.

Carb reduction pyramids, meal frequency/metabolism increases, increasing your LBM.

All have certain benefits.

But the biggest change required losing weight/toning up, you have already made.

You made a decision to do it, so congrats on the effort and enjoy the results

Thanks everybody for the words

Looks like the numbers are going down again, not too rapidly, but each day there is a little change. Minor flutter had me a tad worried.

How 'evil' are carbs, and are there 'good' carbs? I have quite a love for whole wheat pasta, I might have one pasta dish based around it each week, should I cut the pasta out completely?

On the 'eat smaller, more often' front, I'm snacking on raw nuts and dried fruit as I potter around, is it better to graze like this, or should I actually set a time every 3 hours where I will eat XYZ items, then ABC items in another 4 hours, so on and so forth?

Carbs allow your brain to work. Just remember that.

No. It might be in your best interest in finding out your hormonal profile, digestion and overall body composition so that you can get a clear picture of what you need to be eating for fat loss. The points provided above are all safe and solid information. It's pleasing to see so many people reaching out to help. Discipline and consistency are going to breed the results you are looking for. If you need some help than I can send a food diary for you to fill out and that will give you a very clear picture. I hope that is helpful S.A.

Sweet thread resurrection. (4.5 years..)

I've been lifting heavy shit and not eating shit for a while. Cheers.

**edit: I still use a heap of plastic tubs for stuff. Clearly that wasn't my problem.

**edit again: I skim-read my old post, fuck I was retarded.

Here's Cams Plan For Being Less Fucking Fat For All You Fucking Fat Fucks.

Step 1: Don't eat shit.
Step 2: Be active
Step 3: Repeat and continue steps 1 & 2.
Step 4: Be more active.
Step 5: Be honest with yourself.

Results aren't immediate, but they're reliable, repeatable, measurable, and even better, cheap.
