Depends on the car and gas system. Talking to my brother its between $3500 and $5000 (sequential injection). Some places might charge more but you should shop around.
Some 4WD's have the main fuel tank replaced with the gas tank and an Auxillary tank fitted for dual fuel.

the price of gas is going to go up as the feds have deemed it should have exise applied to it, there is to be a sliding scale to increase the cost and the goverment will rape us even more

I'm loathe to actually put my hand up there CG. I can't suggest somewhere to go, LPG conversion is such a cottage industry that companies come and go like sparks in a fire. It's hard to keep up with who's still kicking around. In a pinch, I can be caoxed into having a look at the tune of your vehicle if need be, as I still have all my exhaust emission diagnostic gear. I no longer have access to a dyno in WA though, so I can't do dyno-tuning anymore. (Plus I'm no longer a qualified gasfitter, I let my license lapse, so any fitting I actually did would need to be endorsed by a licensed gasfitter before it went over the pits.)
Sequential systems (which you should ALWAYS go for, if your car can support one) you're looking at roughly $3.5-$5k for the system. From what I last knew, there was a mass shortage of lpg tanks, and what once cost $300-$400, now go for around $1600. I'm unsure if this is still true.
With LPG systems, you get what you pay for, so to save you any heartache, buy the most expensive, technologically advanced system you can afford. Seriously, don't count your pennies with an LPG system. You'll only have problems.
Yeah, there is supposed to be an excise applied to LPG from '08 I thought, either that or '12. It was going to be something in the order of 4 cpl in the beginning, with an upward trend to 12 cents in following years.
EDIT: one last point. Most sequential systems injectors are designed for a euro market. This means the vast majority of kits are designed for sub 3.0L cars. Be warned before attempting to get a Sequential system for your 5.0L+ V8. You may run into underfuelling problems in the higher rev ranges. I'd hazard a guess Sprint Gas might have something from the US, but don't quote me on it, as they're not the pioneers of the LPG tech these days. Most kits are developed in EU, with Japanese collaboration.

For anyone thinking about converting to LPG, just be aware that the car's economy on LPG is not as good as what it is on petrol. I had a couple of Commodores on LPG in the mid nineties, they were on dual fuel, and I would say that on average the LPG consumption would have been around 20% more than petrol.

That's a pretty varying figure though mungus. I've had cars with WORSE mileage than that, and a couple with considerably more. A Prado we had on LPG was actually 12% better than petrol for mileage. I drove it from Perth to the eastern states, to visit the OEM's and show them what they were doing wrong with THEIR lpg systems at the time. So yeah, that mileage figure isn't set in stone.

re: vapour injection - one of first models to be designed for was the Landrover 4L V8 - works amazingly according to people i know that have it fitted.
yes t is a european engine, but still a decent size.

Small cars are cheap enough to run. I have a 03 pulsar so a tank ($60) lasts me a fortnight so not giving up any boot space. But then again I think gas is better for the environment.

Yeah cost of LPG is definitely going to rise big time once new excise levels are fully implemented. I'd be trying to convert to CNG if anyone does that locally. Then you can install the gas compresser in your garage and fill up at home, never have to deal with an oil company again (except for lubrication).

Excise will only be applied at 12.8c/L with a staged application over 5 years.
If LPG was to increase by 12.8c/L overnight, it would still be cheaper to run than petrol.
When I had my conversion done (for $3400) I calculated a 10,000km payback time after rebates. This will vary depending on vehicle, fuel consumption and local fuel prices.

my BA Falcon with a mixer ring installation was averaging just under 12l/100km on petrol but is now averaging 14l/100km on gas. Works out to something around 16%. Still, it has gone from costing me $67(ish) a week to $33 a week to fill.

Sounds like snake oil. Steer clear.
RE: CNG, the then you have to realise is that it's stored at a MUCH higher pressure than LPG, and as such the tank, or pressure vessel, is usually MUCH heavier/robust/expensive. You're either looking at a VERY heavy steel tank, or a VERY expensive composite material, which although light, is as I said, super expensive. (we're talking $5-6k per tank expensive)
Not only that but CNG (methane) has fuck all bang for its buck compared to LPG. It's in the order of 30% more consumption back to back compared to LPG if I remember correctly. I really should go google the BTU's of all these fuels, to give me a bit of a refresher.
