Hmm
Have a 27" i7 at home which is great for dev work, but looks like I'll be starting to do a bit of a commute soon. The little MSI Wind hackintosh is great for basic stuff but kinda struggles under XCode. Might be time for a new toy...

i'm pretty damn keen on a 13".
was keen on the old model, but really didn't want to drop back to a core2 duo....
edit:
The intel HD3000 graphics also = sandy bridge.
Onboard intel shit about as fast as the low end nvidia/amd stuff..
If you look at the Intel icon you'll see it is the new one i.e. the 2011 one for SB..

my 5mth old i7 MBP now feels really old and crappy...![]()

Would these be available at the Apple Store yet?

Apple store has limited stock of 15" and 17", no 13" though.

Just bought a 13" air, everything else seems like a huge lump now.

Brought a 11" Air just the other day, owned it for less than an hour and took it back to the Apple store without even opening the box. After realising that it needed an expensive, third party USB cable to transfer data from my other mac I came to the conclusion that Apple were treating their loyal customers with complete disdain.
Give me an Air with Firewire and you get my money and my support, force me to rely on half assed data transfer using USB2.0 and you get nothing.

13" in stock at the Apple store.

So you are assuming I don't have time machine backup. So lets assume I do. How do I transfer data from my present mac to the Air? Assuming I still have the Air.

according to that, no proprietary cable is required.
who fed you that bullshit?

That bullshit was fed to me by an employee at the Apple store in Hay St. And yes it is bullshit.
According to the Apple link you kindly provided there are four ways to transfer data from mac to mac. 1. Firewire, oops Air doesn't have it. 2. Ethernet, oops Air doesn't have it.
3. Wireless, oops I don't have it. And bluetooth is impractical for large data transfer. 4. Files on disk, oops Air doesn't have a cd drive. Or an external hard drive using USB.
So what we have is a computer that only accepts large amounts of data using a USB connection and if you wish to transfer data from one mac to another it would appear that you need a USB cable that has a an electronic device added to it that allows data transfer.
I double checked at the Apple store if that was correct but they didn't sell the cable so I had to go to Dick Smith to buy one. I double checked at DS if the cable was needed and that appeared to be general consensus with everyone I asked.
Firewire cable $6
Windows to Windows USB $50
Mac to Mac USB $70

dont the mac airs have itty bitty ssd drives..like 128gb or something..
if so you wouldnt be transferring mega amounts of data to it..or very often at that..maybe once off..
so why not plug in a external usb drive n transfer that way...borrow one if its only a one off dump
usb2 may not be megafast with todays new interfaces around...but its faster than firewire 400..
u sure the usb in the mac air is not usb3..if so that would justify a premium price for a cable...
check ebay for a cheeper one
edit..no usb3....only 64 or 128gb ssd drives....just put the files on a thumb drive..or connect to
the other mac wirelessly...a couple mins longer wait thats all
as for no ethernet....you have to get a usb to lan adapter dongle to have ethernet on the air..

If you have an access point in your house, there's your link from ethernet to wireless.. You could then move data using Apple proprietry mojo (of which I know nought), or set up a ftp server on one of the machines.
A question for you Appleites..
Using something like Handbrake, is it possible to take an existing AVI or MP4 file and convert it so the underlying codec inside the container is changed?
I have some movies on a HDD that my WDHDTV thingy won't play..
Or is the result going to be apalling quality? In which case "arrr me hearties"..
================
Edit: re-read, "don't have wireless"
For the price of that cable an access point would be a bargain.. Be handy to be able to use it on the net too.
Or ebay the cable.

If you don't have wireless, what do you plan to use the air for? Its the only connectivity option (other than tethered iphone perhaps).... and these days computer with no internets = poo.
What's so hard about USB hard drive transfer? Surely if you were in the market for an air you were planning to back up / store excess data on external storage anyway?
Methinks the macbook air is not suited for you.
The air is fine if your usage patterns fall within its spec. Yours appear not to....
edit:
other option is USB network adapter for the air (useful anyway if you were wanting to transfer a decent amount) and plug into your wired network?
