Looks like I'm going overseas next week. Was thinking about buying a lens duty free..
is it worth it, or just get it over the net?
was after a 300mm... pay up to about 800$ ish. dont know a lot about em... any sugestions?
It would be worth it if you're worried about Australian warranty, but with a lens I think you'd be pretty safe as long as you didn't go with some obscure brand from Outer Mongolia.

monsta - forget duty free on camera gear, the prices are horrible.
What I did with over $3k worth of gear was use the Tourist Refund Scheme
Advice for travellers
There are a few conditions, but pretty much you can shop wherever you like (including online within Australia before you go), and get your GST refunded at the departure gate.

You can get a 55-300mm VR lens for around 400.
or a 70-300mm for around 600.
or a 300mm prime for about 1200.
You can always look at buying second hand lenses. Camera Electronics in Northbridge have a cabinet full of used gear in excellent condition.
I have purchased several lenses from that cabinet and they always have something interesting or hard to find, well worth a look.
