Bendito, you are 100 different kinds of champ.
I think this is exactly what I need.
Mmm, the only reason I ask is because I can jog for mebbe 40 mins (with walking breaks), but can ride for ages.
And because - and I say this knowing that I'm up for ridicule - I don't know how to run.
I look retarded when I run, and I've got no idea if I'm doing it efficiently or not.
To put it in perspective, I only realised this week how much easier it is running in sneakers than steel-caps (which I wear most of the time), and that if I breathe in through my nose, my throat won't taste of blood after five minutes.
I'm an exercise virgin, beyond school rowing and hockey.
You won't get ridiculed for trying. The effort already makes you a winner.
Myself, my ankles are so wrecked from overstriding when I run, slapping the foot down at the front and stretching the ligaments, that I have to strap them up on my non-running days and walk backwards down stairs to be able to run the next day. So we're all working towards perfection.
Figuring out the divide between when your head wants to stop and when your body needs to stop is half the fight, remembering it makes up the rest.

I've managed to drop my circuit time by 45 seconds so far.

lol..running burns more calories all things being equal. Its a harder exercise, requires more effort and will get you fitter than cycling (generally speaking ofcourse). If your going to army reserves, running will do you more favours than being good at riding.
Steel caps = madness
I usually have air coming through both nose and mouth when im really pushing. You get more air through your mouth. The blood thing is a worry??!!??
I ran til I puked yesterday, and now my ankles are... unhappy, so I may have to look at that balance.
As far as the blood thing, a nurse (GreyWolf) explained it to me - gulping down cold air through your throat is bad because is chills/dries out your throat and lungs. So that's why god invented sinuses - they warm and humidify the air. There was no actual blood, just the metallic taste and a bit of pain.
So basically, I didn't know how to breathe properly, which is also a little embarrassing.
Fair point on the running - I doubt they train you to rely on having a pushie when you're on duty XD
Adopt a more gentle pace and focus on your breathing + smooth strides?
if your ankles are taking a hammering, if possible find a beach to run on. . .(gain in my opinion, bike = x1, running = x3, running on beach =x5,6,7,8,9,10) i dont know how many beaches are in tassie though. . .
as far as technique, it will come with muscle memory, the more you run. . the more you will know how to run. . . if that makes sense.
if its boring, find some one to do it with, competition eliminates boredom. . . belive me when someones next to you, you will push each other![]()
Have lost something like 5kg of fat and gained a bit over 3kg of muscle in the last few months, I should have jotted down exact numbers this morning.
Slow, steady. Pleased.

Hi Cam,
If I recall correctly, you lost 5kg of fat and gained 3 kg of muscle. That's an awesome improvement!
It also goes to show why it's not about the weight loss alone - looking at just the net 2kg loss it doesn't sound that impressive to weight watchers but when you think about losing 5kg of fat - that's a different story.
Also, when you lose weight, you want to try to keep as much muscle as possible. It's enough of an achievement just to maintain lean muscle mass when losing weight - but to actually gain 3kg of muscle is a fantastic bonus!
Keep up the good work - but for the moment, enjoy the long weekend!
Thought I'd chime in. After being the human petri dish for every flue over winter, finally managing to chain a few workouts together. Nice weekend, swam 1.2km Friday, Jog 3.5km to the gym 1hr workout and jog back Sat and 23km cycle Sun.
Granted, it does hurt to sit down but, damn I needed that!
Goal is the Powerstation Tri Sprint distance and Great Bike Ride 52km in Nov.
Anyone here know the key to stopping stomach cramps when jogging? I got plagued by them last summer and had my first nasty one jogging home Sat. Not sure if it's being dehydrated, or having too much water in the belly heading out for the jog?
Here you go Smitty - Running Cramps
There a number of different variables but if you were out yesterday I'd take a punt and say it might be related to hydration/or an electrolyte deficiency. Training/racing in these conditions needs to be undertaken intelligently and if you're pissing fanta that's not a good sign. Given your goal and history and cramping you need to be smart with your nutrition strategy. Important you get that dialled. Remember your muscle glycogen levels are only substantial enough to fuel about an hour of exercise.
So, just over one week and 4 1hr run/walking sessions (plus push/situps on other nights) later, things are already getting a little easier.
I can go for longer without having to stop and walk, running is a bit smoother, and it makes me feel more awake when I get up the next morning.
Also changed my diet to include up & go, raw veggies and fruit.
I'm also a bit thinner, but have gained 3kgs... go figure.
stupid question but how do you work out that you have lost x kg of fat and gained y kg of muscle?? some fancy wizzbang scales or something??
if its easy to do thatd be an awsome motivator for myself as I seem to stay around the same weight when training hard and having some resembelance of muscle as I do when im fat and lazy and it kinda gets disheartining eavn though you know your doing awsome.
A combination of pinch tests, scales and maths.
Spock is my go-to guru on such things.
skin fold calipers, scales, girth measurements....all of which arent hugely accurate, but often all we are equiped with.
Well after already starting a get fit routine when this thread was first made, I slacked off that but about six days ago I committed to start again by setting times for exercises throughout the day to make it easier to committ to and so far, in those six days, I have lost 2 kg which means I should be able to reach my goal of between 70 and 75kg's (I am currently 79kg) by leavers in December.

Last year my work introduced a gym to the office.
I was great for about 4-5 months, then went on a holiday, and didnt go back
until this year, when I was all motivated, and went for about 3 months, and was taking thermalene as well as eating properly (including breakfast).
Then work got too busy, and I didnt have time to go.
On the long weekend, went camping at the Stirling Ranges, while climbing one of the hills I realised how truly unfit I have become,
So yesterday went and bought myself a road bike, (pushy) and hope to do 30-45 minutes riding before work about 3-4 times a week, with some walking/running in the evenings on the other days.
Still too busy to use the gym at work unfortunately.
Edit: Goal is to increase fitness level, so I dont run out of steam so quick, and getting rid of the gut would be nice too.

and the moobs too tim?![]()
I wanted to loose some weight. Bout 10kgs.
I stopped drinking softdrink about 3 months ago and have dropped 8kgs. No other diet change (diet is pretty healthy anyway. fast food on occasion, plenty of red meat, fish chicken and salads)
Next is to get fit enough to play vetrans football next season.
