Command-Shift-3
Command-shift-4 will give you a cursor that you can drag and select what you want to capture, and both methods will create a new picture on the Desktop.
Holding control at the same time will copy the image into clipboard instead of to the desktop.
But yeah, command-shift-3 is all you need
