    Slow Cooker advice please

I've just bought a 6.5L slow cooker and will be using it for the first time today. It's come with a recipe book that's for a 4.5L capacity.

Do I need to add extra liquid to compensate for the shallowness in the cooker?

    (Recipe is pot roast)

I experiment a lot with mine. Only just recently got one. Never needed too much liquid, everything tends to render down nicely. Too much liquid and you'll end up with a stew.

It really depends how long you plan on cooking it for. If yr cooking it on fast, I'd say add a bit more, but if yr cooking it on slow, maybe not, depending on the size, and the things you add
I absolutely love my slow cooker! You pretty much can't go wrong. I used to use the recipes as a guide, but now I just do what I want I haven't had a fail yet!

As long as you have enough liquid to just cover the contents, you will be fine for liquid level

just keep an eye on it the first time and stir it every now and again.

As mekon said, they tend to sort them selves out quite nicely

the liquid added is to match the rest of the ingredients in the recipe, the size of the cooker being used isn't an issue unless it is something that is supposed to be covered by liquid level, for anything else if you add more or less you will end up with either watered down or dried up final product.

you can use your 4.5 litre recipe book in your 6 litre slow cooker as is with room to spare but if you had a 6 litre recipe book you would have to cut back on everything by 25% to make it fit a 4.5 litre slow cooker.
Do you remember the good old days before the internet?

when arguments were only entered into by the physically or intellectually able.

This is a pretty good rule of thumb.

Unless you're cooking thumbs, then I really don't know.

It doesn't matter to much with slow cookers.

Even on high they only get to about 95 degrees or so. I think low is about 85.

My slow cooker book says if your modifying a recipe meant for the stove or oven put less liquid in than the recipe says as it doesn't boil away in a slow cooker.

Thanks for the advice peoples. As per the recipe, I put the roast on top of the vegies and it ended up being a bit dry (but was still very tender). I'll bury the beef next time to see if it stays moist.

    Next week - curry!
