    the STAT test

    hey all,

as some of you have noticed my bitching and moaning about how much i hate my job, i have finally decided to take a step in the right direction, im going to go to uni, however i need to do a STAT test, because in high school i was an incredibly slack bugger, that had no goals in life.

so my question is, has anyone done it?, what can i expect?, and does anyone have any example question books?

    cheers all

It's pretty easy, I did mine a few years ago and had no dramas at all.

Just apply at Curtin or ECU, then even if you fail the STAT, you'll still be top of your class

Unfortunately STAT entry is not permitted for any engineering course at Curtin (I don't think the other uni's accept STAT either).

However, I'd try applying anyway, and attach your aircraft maintenance qualifications to your application. I was accepted for Electronic/Communication Eng at curtin, with a yr 12 maths subject and a commercial pilots licence. I know people who have got in with less.

The other option would be to get accepted for an easier technical course, then transfer after a semester or two.

    Good luck.

I thought it was permitted so long as you had a pass in chem, physics, calculus and applic.

Did you ask Curtin about applying or are you just getting the stat out of the way, kenty?

Apply and see how you go, no harm in trying. They may not accept you into Engineering straight away due to not having completed pre-rec's. What they will do however is accept you into a general Science degree which covers all the basic stuff you missed out or didn't do in high school.

You only do the first 6 months/1 semester in the science degree learning basic maths, chem, computing skills, and physics. Really basic 101 units. Do them with an average of over 65% (Which is really easy to do if you are motivated) and they will accept you through into Engineering with some of your first year units exempt because of what you did in the science degree.

Namely you will get out of Engineering Maths 120 and an optional first year unit. You will still need to complete EFDP and Electrical systems that are covered in the Engineering first semester course. Even though you are wanting to do Civil, first year units give you a taste of Electrical, software, civil and mechanical units so you get to see what each one does.

Easiest and best way to do an Engineering degree at Curtin is as above, it can be difficult to get straight in, I too had to go the above route all because I never did Chem in high school yet did all other pre-req's and was a previous student at Curtin.

You're right, the STAT can be used to satisfy English competence. That said, I got in without a STAT exam, and my yr 12 English result was 4%

Reasonably sure you can get in with STAT and some make up courses, but as others have said, best way to be sure is to get the info directly from Curtin so you know for sure.

i wouldnt be doing the whole stat test it seems, just the english/written portion just to satisfy the english requirements, apperantly my cert IV covers everything ubt that

i have been asking curtin, but their answers are somewhat grey and foggy, leading me to ask question, after question.

the last response i got from curtin

"It may seem scary, but your best bet would be to use your Cert IV and do the STAT to get into the BSc (check out TISC: TISCOnline - Latest News ; and Canning College run a short course on ‘how to get the best out of your STAT’).

There is much more flexibility in this course and the units you’d study would be on the same level as in the Enabling Course but you could do them ‘externally’. What you’d lack would be the extra support provided by Canning/Tuart – but if you weren’t attending on campus, you’d miss out on this in any event."

also part of an email i recieved a while ago and just saw

"there is an alternative. Your Cert IV PLUS 'English literacy' would meet Curtin entry requirements. (You'd need to do the 'mature aged' entry test (the STAT; if you are over 20 by March 2012) or a Curtin Test of English to meet 'literacy'). You would then be to apply for Curtin’s BSc. You would come in under the Multidisciplinary Science major and be able to study any required ‘bridging units’ and meet the requirements for Engineering."

Yup this is how I got in, had derailed career path, floated around then decided on Civil Engineering when I was 25.

Go do the STAT and pass (pretty easy really). If you've done applicable maths in high school (or whatever the equivalent is now) then you can get away with 6 months of the Multi-disciplinary science, if not you need to do 2 maths units to get through (you need to cover Physics, Chem and Maths and pass with over 60-65%). Then jump over to Engineering for the super fun 4-5 years.

This is actually how most mature age students I have talked to got in since if you don't know what you want to do earlier it can be hard to tick all the boxes. At least curtin gives you a reasonable pathway to do it, UWA just give you the upturned nose (at least they did when I asked them 4 years ago).

Yeah, I'd be pretty disappointed to have to go to either of those places too.

Hey - ease up. Environmental and religious social engineering are valid professions too! And they're still a step up the unisnob rankings from Enid Blyton...

Wasn't there some kerfuffle in the news lately about certain people at Curtin being receptive to cash payments?
One owner. Only driven gently on Sundays. Sold to best offer. First to see will buy. Reward offered for safe return. Coming soon to a cinema near you. Available for a limited time only.

My waterbed broke this morning. Oh, I don't have a waterbed. Bugger.
