    Which tablet?

I'm looking at buying a tablet as a Christmas present for my daughter, but as I'm not overly computer savvy would like some advice from those in the know. My daughter will primarily use it for gaming, kind of along the lines of a larger version of her current Nintendo DSI and I dont want to be spending big bucks on something that has a lot of capabilities that will never be used. Any ideas?

How old is she, and how tech savvy? Point and shoot tablet is iPad; if you go Android (far more flexible, but probably less cool for a teenager?) then nothing without the Honeycomb OS....

She's only 12, but pretty switched on with this stuff (she's the go-to girl at home for sorting out computer problems - typical of the youngsters these days I guess). I'm a little wary of getting her anything that will result in any big internet bills though, as she certainly doesn't understand self restraint in that area.

Not sure if it will be available to us here in Australia before Christmas or not but this would be the first choice for its price and overwhelming amount of content available.

    Funny you should ask,
There's a discussion about the new 199 dollar kindle fire going on in the android thread as we speak. Links are all there.

Edit: Red headed step child and all that...

Apple iPad is "their-way-or-no-way" (and I am not saying it as a bad thing for everyone, it does simplify things and keeps a standard) , Android tabs allow far more freedom with customisation (which can be a problem for people as well!). I have an Asus Transformer which has a keyboard dock (making it pretty much a netbook with 16 hours battery life), USB ports, SD card slot etc - so very usable for me. But each to their own. If you choose iPad, go for it: if you choose Android, only get a tablet with the latest OS (Honeycomb) or it will be crippled...

I am mainly familiar with the ipad , so how is the keypad interface with the other tablets , especially with gaming? Might also be worth thinking about future proofing it to a certain extent...

Why? Its been at least 5 years since Sony sold anything that wasn't grossly overpriced for what you got in the spec department.

I am looking for a tablet for this reason, are there any others beside the iPad
that would suit? If iPad is the better choice, then which one the iPad1 or iPad2?

Yes, any Android tablet running Honeycomb.

Seriously tossing up between an Android tablet or phone too but waiting for something to "jump out" at me.
Wondering if there are any honeycomb ROMS on any of the cheaper (yet bluetooth enabled) devices.

Yeah nook colour with Honeycomb on is meant to be pretty sweet.
There will be a huge drop in Android tablet prices now that Amazon has released the Fire.
Expect a big shake up with price wars to try and win users.
