    Time Management and Self Motivation

    Hey,

I'm looking for some time management and self-motivation tips? I find that when it comes to uni im very good at procrastinating, and putting things off till the last minute.

I have tried alot of things and normally i can just kick my ass into gear and just get onto it but other times it takes me days to get started and i'm not happy with my end product.

Can anyone recommended a good book about this subject?

    Thanks Michael

Maybe change your degree. I tend to procrastate for 2 main reasons - either I don't like what it is I have to do, or 2, I don't understand it.

You might also be a person who excels under pressure (I make much better use of my time when I am short of it), but given that you are not happy with the outcome if you take an honest hard look, it maybe because of one of the 2 above.

I'll send some tips and advice to you a bit later. There's something else I've got to do now.

Rocky movies motivate me. No it's not weird and I'm not the only one.

Break down your day into 30 minute or 1 hour blocks. Work out what things you have to do each day, accurately identifying the tasks is the key. Assign as many blocks to each task as you think you'll need. After you accomplish each task, give yourself some sort of reward/break before you move on to the next task. Getting into a routine is the best way of getting things done.

If you can't self motivate you can always try listening to the Tony Robbins types (do a net search). A lot of people swear by his work.

Humans pick the path of least resistance. Given a choice between studying and having fun, they will pick having fun. Given a choice between failing a semester and studying, they will pick studying.

If you want to make yourself study put yourself in a position where it is the path of least resistance. Study week with exams in 4 days time with a unit you have not even bought the textbook for is one great example. Others are manufacturing a situation where studying is the easiest choice to make. For example if you give your Dad 500 bucks and say 'Don't give it back to me until I have finished this assignment' and he will go through with it, watch how quickly that assignment gets done

look at things you can't afford but want to buy, to inspire you to do well

then tell yourself you'll do 10 minutes of study/work then stop
then reassess your desire to continue around that time. starting is what i struggle with

Read it in a mirror, it's the best advice on here...
"In all the human societies we have ever reviewed, in every age and in every state, there has seldom if ever been a shortage of eager young males prepared to kill and die to preserve the security, comfort and prejudices of their elders, and what you call heroism is just an expression of this fact; there is never a scarcity of idiots." -The Culture

The most common tips for motivating yourself surround goal setting and completion and the success that process creates.

The key is to set an overall goal .. ie Im going to do my Degree .... then step back from that goal and make smaller progress goals.

The smaller goals are the ones like ... complete xyz unit/assignment etc. By completing these on time and in line with your goals you will (hopefully) have a feeling of accomplishment .... from here you move immediately on to the next goal.

As you progress you will build a sort of momentum .. and eventually it will just be self sustaining.

Down time between goals is a killer. The more you procrastinate the harder it is to start.

Set one small goal a day and complete that. Then 2 ..... then 3 ... and so on.

I'm in sales... I work on self motivation every day, and need to achieve targets on a monthly basis..

If you have a Long term target you NEED to break it down. eg: I need to sell 15 cars a month. If you target 15 cars a month you will only achieve the 15 deals, or fall short. But, if I break my target down to something more managable I will definately exceed my target.

If I break it down to 4 deals a week, I will get 16 deals a month. Already I've exceeded my personal target. But I go one step further and set daily goals, I aim to sell 1, just 1 single motor vehicle per day. I know I can do it, it's not a hard task.. heck I've sold 6 in a day before, how hard can 1 be. So I do everything in my power to make 1 single sale a day. By the end of the month I normally will have between 20 and 25 sales on the board. I've well and truly smashed my target.

Other key points to self motivation are AVOID PEOPLE WHO ARE NEGATIVE!!! if you associate with negative people you WILL become negative also whether you like it or not... You will get a negative ora around you, and that will show to people you deal with and you will not be as successful.

    I'll put up more shortly..
