    Virus Help!

    Hey,

Yesterday i was using my laptop doing my normal stuff, i was looking at some of those motivational pictures on psb when i was linked to another website that was hosting the images, all the sudden windows pop up with something about a svghost or something along those lines wanting to run and if i wanted to block it or not.

i clicked block, then about 10mins later my laptop just turn itself off. when i restarted my laptop there was alittle icon in the taskbar saying i had a virus and to run a scan asap.

So i went and download AVG install it then try to run it but it won't let me run it in safe mode so i went into the normal mode, and after about 2-3mins i get the blue screen on death saying there was a issue with my laptop and windows is shutting it down before it fucked it anymore

    Can anyone help me?

    Thanks Michael

    edit: im running window xp

When you say you "were linked to another website" do you mean you clicked on a link?

    If so, which one?

Also, is your xp machine up to date with its Windows Updates?

If you didnt have Virus protection before this happened, im sure you will from now on
    If you can... you MUST!

i clicked on one of the pics and it link me to the image hosting website.

    Window is semi up-to-date.

AVG just doesn't want to work i have isntall it in safe mode then try to run it and get a error saying it wasn't installed correctly :/

You have a Windows CD though?
Just download the relevant drivers from the vendors website.

Michael it is very important you tell us which image you clicked on so we can stop anyone else from being directed to the site with the malicious code.

Klink, I'd assume it was xs.to, since that is the only site I can remember being linked to recently in the motivational poster thread.

Michael - most new laptops come without CDs, they have a recovery program which allows you to burn a re-install DVD or CD of your own.

If you can get that far...

Ok... just make sure you scan all of your stuff that you backed up before you plug it back into your new virus free installation of xp/vista.
    If you can... you MUST!

As long as you have virus protection on whatever you use to scan the external drive. Plug the drive in and right click the drive and select "Scan with AVG" or whatever. Do this BEFORE you copy or access any of the files.
    If you can... you MUST!

Hmmmm.......sounds like it could be a smitfraud virus. There is a free download virus killer for smitfraud viruses. But I'm at work right now and they won't let me hotlink the website.

i installed spybot and that removed some stuff.

so i reboot and loaded xp normally, still get the blue-screen after about 2mins.

going to try and install NOD32 in safe mode and see if that can find the problem :@

also for some reason i cant use the recovery program to backup all my software on the laptop says its damage and i need to reinstall it
