Vista wont start

VISTAS CRAP... Buy a mac(read hyo), stick with XP blah blah blah...

Now that thats over...

After installing software for my new handycam the other day my vista machine wont even boot into safe mode. Comes up with windows loading files shortly before the standard vista loading screen appears. Shortly after that, a startup recovery utility starts and low and behold can repair the problem. It does mention the file in the topic as being the issue. Some googling etc has discovered its something to do with optical drive drivers used by some software.

Tried safe mode as mentioned, same issue. Tried LKGC, same issue. Ive disabled system restore which now im fucking kicking myself for having done and well yeah fuck.

Running chkdsk at the moment and its most of the way through without errors.

I realy dont want to go so far as a fresh install just yet.

Actually can you do a repair of the current instalation from the Vista DVD?

Is it actually corrupt or just shit? Either way you'd be looking at mounting the disk on another machine and replacing that file. Or deleting it and hoping the software that requires it will fail gracefully if it's not there.

Nope... Laptop. No DVDs. Recovery is on a partition of one of the HDDs.

You MAY still get a repair option as well as the "make my laptop shiny and new" option.

Yep there is. Im trying to avoid it coz im lazy and cant be arse loading software for hours on end.

Playing around in the command prompt today and still not realy much further...
