It's $30 for the boat regardless of what you catch, and $150 annually if you are going after demersals.

Rediculous.
In my experience 10% of recreational fisherman catch 90% of the fish. The majority of fisherman only go half a dozen of times a year. This will just encourage them not to bother and stay home watching the telly. The professionals must be rubbing their hands together.
what a crock of shit, honestly i probably go fishing once every year and a half or two because i cant remember when i went last, theres no way i'd pay something like this to go out for a bit of fun with a couple mates (we never bloody catch anything anyway!)
Absolutely sux, I've just got back into my fishing, and yer you can go fishing quite a bit but you can also spend a lot of time doing sweet fuck all, and this all costs you even more now. So instead of my brother calling me up randomly to see if I want to go, the first question will be do I have my license...
This state is REALLY starting to shit me.
I can see this having the reverse effect to intended--after paying up a fair amount of money, many people are going to say, fuck it, I paid for it, I'll keep it, less catch and release/ Or go harder to get their "money's worth" out of an annual fee. Less people overall may fish--I wonder if they will impound boats for having "unlicenced" fishermen on board?
Just as I was about to buy another boat--anyway, the 2 month closure will mean fuck-all to most fishermen,Oct-Dec, shitty time of the year, weather-and -fish wise.

Dear knobjockeys, you cannot enforce the rules you already have in place. Best way to improve the situations is to make the rules more complicated, with more points of compliance. That'll work a treat!
ka - ching!
There's going to be a lot of boats out there with one person fishing (using 8 lines in the water) whilst 3 mates just sit on the boat drinking beer...
makes me really sad
what ever happened to wetting a line just for the enjoyment? and not having to pay for anything except your own expenses? and coming away with a feed? Instead of having to pay all these inane fees!!!
Takes all the enjoyment away from catching those nice demersal species! Rather it leaves you even more pissed off if you go home not having caught any of them.
So what are you actually paying for im confused?
Enforcement and Research... apparently
But I dont give a fuck about enforcement and research.
I wouldn't get overly upset, if it's shore based, you're fine.
In the UK you need a licence wherever you fish, mostly inland waters.
When you start going up to the streams and reservoirs for trout, it gets really expensive.
I'm not totally against it at all, the money is going into researching sustainability of our fisheries so it can't be all bad.
I do however think the prices are rather steep.
and I think the focus is all wrong... might be time to go Commmercial free...
No Commercial fishermen within the 'Zone'.... fishing for the Demersal species its supposed to protect...
I enjoy(ed) eating and catching fish. I can understand the "it sucks" sentiments shown here.
Worked as a professional fisherperson for 4 years.
I am a poor pleb not rich.
I am concerned about the declining fish stocks and am glad that there is at least some steps being taken.
The government were talking about a blanket ban. There was an outcry as it was going to cause damage to our economy.
While the poor fisherman is at the brunt, I can see that it is the rich that also spend and help keep tourism, boating companies, marinas with their second and third house purchases etc going.
Taking out the small bloke who takes fish without spending it up doesn't impact upon the economy so much.
BTW I purchase farmed fish only these days...check out the labels when you next buy fish.

Friends are like potatoes, if you eat them they die.
As already stated...they can't enforce current rules let alone these new rules.
If rec fisherman are going to pay this much for their tiny % of catch, I geniunely hope commercial fishing gets canned in the 'zone'. You can't make rec fisherman pay this much to "protect" these species and then allow commercial fishing in the same areas.
I saw this one quote on a toilet wall at uni once or twice. "Going to War for Peace is Like Fuckin for Virginity". Well, screwing the rec's and allowing commercial fishing in the name of protection of species is similarly stupid.
