    Slashing? 50?

They have no idea just how big that site is...

But they are way over budget, and I highly doubt any product will be getting exported anytime soon...

one side says they can't pay their bills, the other says they have been ripped off $250M. the project is 1B in the red, sounds like MCC isn't going to reward implementers responsible for blowouts and delays with continued employment and funding.

Citic Pacific, which announced in May last year a $US835m cost blowout, said at the weekend that construction contractor China's Metallurgical Group Corporation had proposed an additional payment of about $US900m.

"Citic Pacific is evaluating and studying the details of the proposal and preparing to negotiate with MCC," Citic said.

"It believes that, among the possible options, continuing to employ MCC to complete its work as fast as possible at a cost within reason is in the best interest of Citic Pacific and its shareholders. At the same time, Citic Pacific will also consider and assess other alternatives."
Citic Pacific cannot axe MCC from implementation this deep in.

The Chinese stopped the blank cheques last year, I'm surprised it's taken this long to affect jobs.

Chinese boss says sorry over work row - The West Australian

The article claims that Dr Hua once left the office in time to see a sunset and told his Australian colleagues about it the next day. They laughed at him, saying that the sunset glow was always the same every day but he worked too late to enjoy it.

ith the cost of the project purchased four years ago going from $US4.2 billion ($4.6 billion) to $5.4 billion and running 1 1/2 years behind schedule, the Chinese found that local managers "still follow the routine working hours and holidays and look forward to year end bonus".

The article also said that concrete pouring often stopped halfway through the process because "engineers were off shift" and "in case of any problem, managers often shirk their responsibilities".

Faced with escalating labour costs because of stiff competition from other resource projects, CITIC sought to import Chinese labour but only a few hundred visa requests were obtained and the Australian Government required all workers to obtain English language accreditations.

Dr Hua, who took up the Australian job after supervising construction of a major highway in Algeria, found "many conditions even worse than those in Africa".

"The rent of a motel room in Karratha is even more expensive than that of a five-star hotel in Sydney downtown," he said.

Li Wenbiao, director of design, procurement and construction, complained that the first two hours of meetings were used to discuss topics unrelated to the mine's construction.
that is actually quite funny. he is calling Australians lazy and stupid.

Citic Pacific set to export iron ore by end of 2010

By Laurissa Smith from Karratha , WA

    Wednesday, 27/05/2009

Emerging iron ore producer Citic Pacific Mining is hoping to export its first shipoad of iron by the end of next year.

That's behind schedule but it means the $5 billion magnetite project is still on track.

Construction of a 450 megawatt power station is well underway and port facilities, which are needed to bring in major project components, are expected to be finished by the end of this year.
end of the year 2010 would have been behind schedule, they were supposed to ahve finished the power plant at end of 2009. At the end of 2011 they still havent completed the power plant. Lazy stupid Australians knocking off when there is still concrete to be poured.

Having spent two weeks there supervising some works, I would say some of the Australian contracting companies are taking the piss. Mind you the whole site is a bit of a shambles. I only conducted a visitors induction that was good for three days and required an escort at all times. I drove threw security twice a day by myself for two weeks and was never questioned.

it would be funny if they confused austria with australia, when they engaged an austrian company to implement a power plant in australia.

Construction of China's biggest resources project in Australia - the $US5.2 billion ($5.3 billion) Sino Iron magnetite project at Cape Preston in the Pilbara - has descended into chaos after the Austrian contractor building the iron ore project's massive power station was axed yesterday.

It was the second major contract to be axed in as many weeks after the company building the crucial magnetite slurry pipeline also had its work terminated, while rumours abound that Sino's controlling shareholder, CITIC Pacific, is about to sack its 20 per cent investor and engineering, procurement, construction and management contractor, China Metallurgical Group Corporation (MCC).

Neither CITIC nor MCC would discuss the status of their relationship yesterday.

A breakdown in relations between two of China's biggest players in resources would prove embarrassing for Beijing, which had hoped to use Sino Iron as an example of the Asian country's ability to construct and operate successfully in Australia.

why? are you going up there to participate in commissioning that power plant? that would be a fun job when everyone involved in designing and building it has been sacked and relations between the constructor and purchaser have collapsed.

Serious professional comment for a moment: If I was able to oversee the entire construction process, across all the companies involved, I could have saved them a lot of money.

The amount of times the same building showed up on my desk, identical to somewhere else, amazed me. Each time replicating new methods. Very inefficient.
Fantastic for me, I just copy and paste the work over. $$. It shouldn't get like that. Someone should see it, next time, they should employ me to fix their shit out before it becomes a problem..

One of the engineers I work with was supposed to be starting with them. He had been offered the job but was waiting for a contract to arrive. He was phoned today to say he was being put on hold. Good thing he hadnt handed his notice in yet.

I don't have any knowledge of CITIC and operations, however for many major projects they are generally joint ventures with ownership of the design. for example Pluto train 2 may be identical to train 1 yet as it's a joint venture with a different company you cannot use any drawings or standards from train 1...

Govt have just loosened things up to bring in thousands more OS workers to fill the "mining skills shortage"

I can see FIFO happening a lot more, but it will be the workers FIFO of China.

wonder how many more workers are going to get laid off
