Windows 7 - The Reg reader review redux ? The Register
It hasn't been smooth sailing for everyone. As with all versions of Windows, wait for SP1. Unless you have vista![]()

I've tried it on many different pieces of hardware, and its very stable.
The shipping version is pretty much service pack 1.
Over 1 million people (including me) have been running it for 9 months and the initial upgrades are in it.
Vista was released with much less real world testing.
Its funny how some people say its just Vista with a facelift, then add wait for the service pack. Surely its one or the other.

Same. I've been running it full time on my desktop since the RC was released, tried the beta on ancient Acer laptop, and on my Macbook.
I thought the RC wasn't as well put together as the Beta, but apparently they intentionally borked DirectX in 7100, since the issues I have aren't present in either the preceding or following builds.
Just ordered it with the student discount, Telstra gives me download quotas so I'll just have to wait for the disk to arrive...
Just had a read of the reg article... most of the complaints are well.... suspiciously most likely due to
- broken hardware
- trying to use XP drivers for unsupported hardware (user FAIL - don't be shocked if it BSODs)
- bitching about upgrade not working (no shit, dumbarse, upgrade from XP is not supported - you need to reinstall)
- bitching about doing things in a different way
There's always going to be a handful of mouthbreathers doin' it wrong.

I did go out and buy a 4 Gig flash drive so i can boot/install it when I finally get it!
Oh and a new graphics card.. honest the old one isn't (fully) supported!!
Oh and more RAM... see Windows 7 is expensive eh... maybe I should complain like the other haters!!!![]()

So I installed W7 on Friday and only had time to pretty much install the drivers. Everything was fine.
Yesterday was an RDO so today I've installed all our software (including a version of Surpac from 2000) and they all run fine. I have run these versions (all 32 bit) using our network licence manager as well as the dongle, which I had to install the driver for. All good.
Our MineSched software needs dotnet 3.5 which I have installed and MineSched runs fine.
I have noticed there are two Program Files folders, one for 32 bit applications and one for 64, I presume.
I like the interface of W7.
It starts faster.
It's taking a little bit of time to learn where things are but it only takes a minute and then it actually makes sense. It seems that if something has been changed/moved, it wasn't done for the sake of it but rather to make it easier to find or use.
I like the snap to edge function for application windows.
I like the preview of a window when you mouse over the Taskbar button - good if you have several emails minimised and aren't sure which one to go to. If you ahve several tabs open in IE then it displays all the tabs so you can go to a specific one. Very nice.
Overall, happy with the change. No problems to report so far.

Run the Windwos 7 adviser I think that tells you.
Otherwise check the CPU details. Like the Core 2 DUO and onwards I think are 64 bit.
If you have an Intel chip I think you can search this page.. the 64 bit CPUs are at the bottom.

hornet:
top tip: search in 7 is everywhere.
if you're in control panel, say - type in the top right "manage" and it will list all the applets with manage in the name...
i agree, how they've moved everything = crap... but search is awesome.
also... click start (or hit start key) and type something you're looking for in email... it will find it - straight from the start menu.
can specify search in email only, by date range, etc.
it rocks. it's quick, too.

edit:
unless your motherboard supports >4gb ram, i'd go with 32 bit - its a little more compatible with shitty old 16 bit apps, and drivers - and uses a little less ram.
If you've got anything more recent than pentium D, and a motherboard that can handle 4gb or more - go 64 bit. its a little quicker (puts the cpu in 64 bit mode, where it has access to more registers, etc), and will support >4gb ram.

Yah, cheers, thro.
Search was actually something I went looking for. I R-clicked on a folder and went to SEARCH and it wasn't in the menu anymore... F1, typed in Search and it says "it's up the top right you n00b".
Works a treat.

highly recommend having a good play with using it though. so much improvement over xp/previous. its actually useful.
replaces the totally-fucking-naff search from within outlook too (you know.. the one that locks your client up for 10 minutes and has a cancel button that does nothing?)![]()
