Trust me Jim...
It was just one big circle jerk...
People were just repping each other back and forth just to see the green bars rise and think they're cool...
I think a rep / aura system is amusing, but possibly to the detriment of the group in general. People get awfully asshurt over negative rep, rather than looking at the positive feedback.
Also, positive feedback can be given for poor comments... it's just a popularity tool that can be a force of evil as much as it can be for good. There's often times when I miss it after somebody gives me a good laugh, or when somebody posts something utterly braindamaged, but would it help the board and the group as a whole to re-implement it?
As much as I would personally enjoy its return, I don't think it benefits "us".
...**edit: Case in point, I'd rep unfunny image macros posted by the oddly inept passive aggressives all the way down to the seventh level of hell.
Because it would get rid of LOL, smileys and all manner of other crap, I also would like to be able to reward others for helpful, technical or amusing posts.
Fair enough I guess, although it's sad, a small bunch of circle-jerkers wrecking it for others.

Would it get rid of people posting nothing but a quote and '5char'?
In life you only get one lap, might as well make it a good one.

5char is a whole different kettle of fish.
See here.
What reward though, a few green pixels? Is it really that important that someone agrees, disagrees, likes or doesn't like someones post? I don't see it being of any real help, other than a bit of an ego boost. The only place I could see the rep system work is on technical questions.

who cares if some people circle jerk? What does it matter?
to me rep is only a different way of implementing the 'like' system on 'FacePalm'.
I can't really see the point of rep (for all the reasons stated above), although one website that I was reading, hid comments that got enough 'dislikes' (or -rep)registered against the comment. You could still read the comment, but you had to click on a button to actually open it. That way it made it quicker to read through the useful comments.

I would give you rep just for being here Morgs.
I miss you.
You read the comments on youtube?
Is such a thing even possible?
Rep does help new riders/members recognise who is full of shit and who has words worth taking value from?

It was the anonymity of it all that fucked it, I'm thinking of implementing more of a "likes" system, vbSEO added it in the new version;
