01 R1 spice up
Hey doods & gals,
Im am in the process of pretty much painting + fixing up some little bits and peices on the good old R1. Ill post up some pics of what it used to look like, and progress pics of what it looks like now.
So far I am at the process of sanding all the fairings down and removing all the gloss from it so I can apply the primer + new colour to it. It was a blue colour before (see pics), and I am planning to make it a satin black colour with some original yamaha stickers.
So far I have sanded down the Brembo logo on the rear brake cylinder (makes it stand out a bit more and takes 5 mins), and applied some red rim tape, which should hopefully look schmick with the satin black paint. There is also a few little cracks in the fairings which I should be fixing up as soon as they are sanded down. Heres some pics, come back for updates soon.

Some updates on the bike as promised...Sorry about the bad quality of photos (taken from the phone).
We have put primer on all the body panels of the bike and have sanded them all down to be super smooth, ready for painting next weekend (satin black here i come). We have also decided to paint the screen fully black (add's the pimp looks to the bike). Still have to clean up the screen a bit, as it has some glue stuck on the bottom of it.
I thought while im at it and all the fairings are removed, i might service the bike aswell since it is coming up for a service anyways, so the usual oil, oil filter, k&n air filter and fuel filter will be done in the next few days.
I have also decided to go -1 tooth on the front sprocket bringing it down to a 15t (they come with 16t) which will give the bike that little bit more acceleration (not that it needs it, i still shit myself on it).
Enjoy the pics, more updates to come soon of the panels all painted

I have an '03 R1 as well as the Duc, and I must say, going -1 on the front was the best mod I did on it. Made a huge difference.

Updates: Bike has now been painted and clear coated (now drying). This week I will be putting all the panels back together and doing a few final touch up's on the bike before starting her up again and going for a ride. I might also look at getting a Speedo Healer so I can adjust the speedo to accomodate for the -1 on the front.
Pics will be up in the next few days

Update
As promised, here are some pics of the final paint work on the panels. Sorry for the quality of the pics (taken from phone). Thanks to sr32, she did most of the painting/clearing for me and also keeping me sane while I couldnt ride the bike LEGEND!
Im quite happy with the way its turned out. Next step is to chuck the panels back on the bike. Ill take some good photos when all the panels are back on the bike and its finished.

You owe me some new lungs
For anyone wanting to know... - Original paint was sanded down with 400/800 wet (not down to the primer, just to get shine off for the primer to stick)
- Some fixes on the panels were done
- 3 coats of 2pak primer (in spraycan - can buy from Monty's Auto Colour on Albany Hwy in Victoria Park)
- Let dry for a week (we could only paint on wkends)
- Sanded with 800
- Let dry for a week
- Painted 3 layers of colour - Satin Black Acrylic Laquer in spraycan
- Most panels we let dry for a week, some had to be resprayed
- 3 layers of Matt Clear Coat - Acrylic Laquer in spraycan (gloss would have lost the whole satin finish)
- Let dry and will need a polish in a couple of weeks
Tips:
Don't paint unless the temperate is stable and in the 20s
Don't paint in a dusty area (you could put plastic sheets down)
Don't drop wet panels (gorgan)
Don't use a dust mask - use a proper respirator with appropriate filters or you'll look like a sniffer

Also just wanted to mention how crazy Q-bond is. Its pretty expensive stuff, but to fill in any cracks/holes in your panels, it works pretty well. I read a couple of threads on here about it and decided to give it a go, and was amazed at the results.
Definately recommend Q-Bond for anyone wanting to fix any cracked or damaged panels

Thanks
Yeah i got a sticker kit for it, but im thinking i might leave it ghost rider spec for a while till i get bored of it, then ill put some stickers on
(gotta be careful with the stickers though, i hear each sticker applied add's an extra 5 hp to the rear wheel )
