    1985 GSXR restoration

    Hi All

I am restoring a 1985 GSXR 750 and I need some direction. Does anyone know who can refurbish old OEM fairings for a resonable price (Just the ducktail and frame covers), a little plastic welding is required? If someone knows what they are doing and is willing to offer a service I will pay cash!

Secondly, has anyone got a complete repair manual for sale or for lend? The bike is completely stripped but I need to put it back together, now that all the parts have been cleaned up and powder coated etc.

Thirdly, where can I find a shop that specilises in nuts, bolts, screws etc as I need to replace the majority of the nuts/bolts. I live south of Joondalup.

And last of all can someone recommend a paint shop/person who can paint my fairings at a resonable price?

I'll load up pictures of the bike as soon as I get home next weeks and then a follow up every couple of days with the progress. Not long now

    My mobile number is 0429453357.

Get in touch with 'potato' for your painting. What condition are your carby slides, they are a weak point on these.

As for nuts and bolts go to a fasteners shop. I go to L&T Venables. They have good quality stuff and i get tradies discount (about 60% off). There is one in Wangara or Malaga

Here's a lead. Mick Hone's website currently includes some side covers for $199 each. I believe they are new old stock, but you'd need to check, and probably quickly too.
    I hope this helps.

So glad to see a bike like this being restored and not butchered or fightered. This bike totally changed the landscape of sports bikes .. and it's awesome to see one being put back to the way it should be

Hi all you mad gixxer lovers, will post some pics tonight for your viewing. The help and support has been great, big cheers to everone for the help and info. Just got the new cabs and K&N filters, motor looks choice now with the fresh paint job and a clean looking set of carbs.

Just taking the frame in to get it cleaned inc swing arm etc. Just waiting on bearings which are on back order from Japan. All going well the bike should be ideling in the next 4 -6 weeks depending on how long parts take to come from overseas.

I totally agree with Lunar_c in regards to these bikes being cut up and made into fighters. These bikes have so much history and for such and old bike get up and go with style. Watch out fuel injected bikes, there is another oil cooler coming to eat the road up.

Once the bike is up and running, I will organize a road ride. Would be good if we can get a few other oil coolers together for such an event.

By the way, if yous are wondering why it takes me so long to reply its because I work away FIFO.

    Safe ridding !!

i reckon the first gsxr's were the hottest thing on 2 wheels, and possibly still are.. most new bikes these days are a little bit generic as they fly past, but a well restored or looked after slabby in its original war paint just stands out a mile.. just my opinion of course! i have a bit of oil cooled goodness myself, a '91 slingshot 750, the last of a good thing. i reckon its the round headlights, which gives em the real endurance racer look that really does it for me..

The before pics of the 85 GIXXER

Here are some pics of the GIXXER getting its first makeover. As you can see in the pic of the sub frame there is a crack on both sides of the sub frame. This was a common problem with these bikes. I have had it repaired by placing a solid aluminum square rod inside the sub frame tube and then having it welded into place. The frame is away getting powder coated but when I get it back I will post more pics of the weld etc.

Also, the oil cooler radiator has been replaced with a new one as the previous radiator had been damaged in a fall off the side stand by the previous owner.

For all those wanting to polish your 1985-87 frames DONT. These frames are anodised which means that to get a high shine will be near impossible. Once the anodising has been removed the frame can't be re-anodised as the frame has CASTING in it. The only way to protect the frame from corrosion is powder coating or painting. Some of the new powder coats are very durable and come with touch up paint in the event that the coating gets chipped.

Due to my frame having the anodising removed I have powdercoated it in a pearlescent black which gives the frame depth and a fresh look. Pictures coming soon.

Here is pics of the freshly painted engine and new Mikuni RS 34 Flatsides with K&N filters.

I'm just waiting on bearings to come from Japan for the swing arm and rear shock. On the 16th of next month I should have the bike in a rolling frame with motor instauled. Keep watching for pics.
