    '92 ZZR250 Restoration

    Hey guys!

I recently picked up my first bike ( a ZZR250 ) from 'Potato'. It is a bit of a project so I thought i would document the process of getting back to showroom condition here . After metal puttying the oil leak and going for a couple decent rides on her, everything seems to be running beautifully! Which means I can start givin her some lovin in the looks department The bike has been dropped previously which left it with a broken side mirror, screen, side fairings and gear shifter. Potato was nice enough to source a new side mirror, screen and gear shifter for me before I bought the bike but there is still a fair bit of work to get her lookin sexy.

The side fairings were cracked in the crash and have been fixed (sort of) but still require a fair bit of body filler, sanding and painting. The new/old side mirror is a bright metallic blue colour (the bike is metallic dark grey) and scratched up so that also needs sanding back and painting. There is a fair bit of over-spray on the frame and other random parts (paint job must be non-factory) which I want to get rid of and then polish the frame to a mirror finish. Some chips in the paint show purple underneath so I'm glad it has been re-sprayed . I will probably strip the rims and polish them up too. A site showing pics of polished rims and frame --> Frame Polishing 101. I am also moving the rear indicators to the factory ones either side of the brake light in the tail from the ugly sticky out ones it has now. I found a picture to show exactly what I mean by that... I'm taking off those bottom indicators and using those ones either side of the brake light -- > http://i713.photobucket.com/albums/w...women91/91.jpg

Thats about it for now. Other than more cleaning and polishing of every other part. Sanding back corrosion on the forks and stuff... I'll keep you guys updated! Pics at the bottom (I'll get pics of the damage soon).

I have also done the frame/ rims polish (well just the outer rim). The rough cast part of the frame was fairly challenging with my tools and I was running out of time so I never got around getting a polish out of it. The big part of the frame looks fantastic when polished.

    This is mine

Alright, first update! I have given up on painting the fairings and mirror because I cant justify $300 worth of paint and the many hours of sanding when I know I will be moving her on when I can. I'll live with the marks for that price. There is also another more important problem I need to get fixed first - two cracks between the oil filter cap and the drain plug. My brother kinda fixed them with some metal putty but the leak is getting worse so I want to get that fixed properly. Got in contact with Gav today and he has told me it may be an engine out job
Deciding that I wont be painting the fairings has also killed my motivation to polish the frame so that wont be happening either now. I am still relocating the rear indicators though! Just have to get the million layers of paint off the darn things.
Next update when I find out whats going to happen with the crack repairs and get the indicators in

Bad luck mate, but good luck with the repairs!

Maybe you could look at getting the exhausts prettied up a little? Something easy like that?

    Update 3!
Got the indicators done. Lookin schmick . I also fixed the leak! You can see the cracks here:
Don't ask me how it happened.. What I ended up doing was draining it for a few days and then degreased the shit outta the drain plug, focussing on the cracks. Then I got some sealeys knead it metal putty and forced it into the cracks from inside the drain hole and screwed the drain plug in while it was still setting. I used as little as I possibly could and it came out really neat. Will get some pics of the finished job tomorrow. Here's one more pic of my new indicators to finish the post :p

the rear indicators on the faring dont comply with aust standards thats why the stork indicators are on there, without them you will get a yellow sticker.

Yes you are "right" but I would assume this mod is quite safe and hard to pick on unless you are a inspector.

I might get motivated and do mine aswell.

It can be changed back if it needs to go over to the pits.

I'm not against it, I've been wanting to do this mod and the fender eliminator since i've had the ZZR but its the $100 and the inconvenience of taking it over that stops me.

I agree with you. I wouldnt convert my gpx. Yes it would look better but i would rather not have anything illegal on it. Each to their own i guess.
