    another bloody CB750 cafe project

    sold a perfectly good R6 for a 1981 CB750F super sport.

i have wanted to have a cafe bike for as long as i could remember so i decided now was a good a time as ever to piss away my money. this is my first proper build and although i have quite a bit of knowledge with the design and fabrication my mechanical and tuning capabilities are lacking

i did a lot of research and decided on a DOHC CB750 simply for the more modern performance and i prefer the look of the DOHC motors

the bike the day i bought it…

so over the last 2 months i have been accumulating various parts for my CB750 cafe project. few weeks ago i received my '79 KZ tank which i got off ebay for $80 USD. last week i received my seat in the mail. i had it custom made in the US 8 weeks ago by Benjies Cafe Racers

i need to start chopping the rear of the frame to make it fit

    more parts…

retro CB gauges .. off ebay for $120 USD

today i chopped the rear of frame and fitted the seat ready to weld in permanently. took about 30 minutes of hardcore measuring before i was ready to commit with the grinder.

also refurbed my set of 1972 gauges. fitted a new face plate kit and repainted the needes etc. came up pretty good for a set of 40yo dials…

hey Rhdye, yes its based off a their standard seat but Benjie then modded it to fit the KZ tank i bought by adding another 50mm to the front and adjusting the upholstery to fit. i wasnt keen on using the standard super sport tank as internally, its f-ed but also its a plastic outer skin and the shape isnt right IMO.

its going to be a struggle trying to find time to work on it over the next month or so.. between work and doing a masters degree time is tight right now

    Hey Qtip,
Love a CB750/four build, and I really like the BCR stuff.
Good luck with the masters degree and will be following your build thread.
I have a 1972 CB750/four that is going to be a very long term project but, I really enjoy watching the progress of others builds.
Also wanted to add to your thread as it sucks seeing a hundred odd people view your post and getting 2 or 3 replies.

    cheers Rex.

earlier this week i stripped it right down and with the help of a couple of mates removed the motor. f*ck me its a huge bastard. now my dilemma is how to go about painting it. VHT high temp engine paint be good enough or will it be a waste of time?

i also welded in the new tail with battery holder and grinded off all the mounting tabs on the frame that will no longer be used. so hopefully soon i will be able to send it all out to the powdercoaters

While my project was apart I painted my GSX11 motor (main cases) and then polished the outside cases in the original style. I followed a few good tips from this site (eg warm the paint and the parts etc) and it came up very smooth and neat. I reckon if you have a nice clean motor in the middle of all your custom parts and changes they'll probably stand out even more. Will keep watch with interest. Great job on the guages and rear end so far...
