Smile Build your own - Exhaust Can Design

I just can't seem to find a slip on exhaust can that I like for the CB 1300 and so I thought I'd have a go at making my own. The only problem is finding sufficient technical information to do it. Any ideas would be appreciated. ATM I am looking at a back pressure of say 2-6 psi and a straight through flow with ceramic wool in the skin behind a stainless steel mesh or perforated sheet but really I have very little idea of what I am doing.

Key features should be 1. Small slip on 2. Improve BHP across the entire range with overall improvement of 10% min. 3. Noisy enough to be heard quiet enough to get away with it. 4. Deep base sound escalating to a lovely crackling scream..... Sounds like a girl I used to know.

Any ideas greatly appreciated - Not in any rush but would like to get it right first time.

Not with a slip-on mate, that's full system territory.

sounds good! have you looked into using a slip on built for one of the other big nakeds? and maybe modifying that to fit?

Mike from The Flying Banana made his own for his GS.
Might not be exactly what you are looking for but will give you an idea.

Untitled Document might give you some more...

Edit - they are offline it seems, but they sell carbon/Ti/SS sleeves etc for exhausts.

Modern engine thinking as far as power generation goes (for 4 strokes) is backpressure = bad.

There's no need for it (bearing in mind that its still possible to go to a pipe that's too big, but that's because it will cause the exhaust gas to cool down too much on its way out which makes it flow slower and you lose the extraction effect).

No, you won't burn valves, you just ramp the fuel up a bit with your EFI.

But yeah, like desmo said, 10% gain from a slip on is a pretty bloody big ask.

Add a power commander and some dyno time and you might get somewhat close. If you can get rid of the cat (full system reqd) you'll free up a bit more most likely.

Sorta what Thro said...

You can easily make a nice looking muffler...and it will work...

If you made it freer breathing than stock but not unmuffle it too much, with some tuning I would expect to see a gain in power...

not 10% though...
